Soft cover. Condición: Very Good. Original publisher's beige paper wrappers with staple binding. Black lettering and small green illustration of a bush or tree printed on front cover. "Designed and printed by Lawton and Alfred Kennedy" printed on verso of title page. No date, circa 1968. 7" x 10 1/4." Eleven pages, complete. One black-and-white printed frontispiece photograph of Dakin, complete. Pages are virtually pristine and intact except for light age toning and an almost imperceptible vertical crease running top to bottom that is located about 1 1/2" to side of spine. Covers are clean and intact overall except for light rubbing, a few small faint stains, the slight vertical crease running top to bottom, and offsetting on front cover (an area measuring about 4 3/4" x 7 1/2" in lower-left corner is not discolored while the rest of the front is darkened). A Very Good copy. A printed lecture by W. W. Robinson which was the first in a series of annual lectures dedicated to the memory of Susanna Bryant Dakin. Robinson's lecture is both a tribute and biographical account of Dakin's life, career, and writings. The lectures were first given in the winter of 1967. "Published by the Friends of the Bancroft Library in collaboration with the California Arboretum Foundation, Inc." Susanna Bryant Dakin (nee Bryant; 1905-1966) was an American author and historian. While Dakin initially specialized in Southern California history, she came to research and write about Northern California as well. Dakin was active in a number of literary and botanical societies. She was one of the original members of the California Arboretum Foundation (which created the Los Angeles Arboretum in 1947), a fellow of the California Historical Society, and a founding sponsor of the Friends of the Library association. She was also involved with the Friends of the Bancroft Library, the Society of Asian Art, the American Field Service, Marin Country Day School, and Scripps College. Brothers Lawton Kennedy (1900-1980) and Alfred Kennedy (?-?) were both noted Bay Area printers. Lawton opened his own press in 1952 and worked with other noted Bay Area printers including John Henry Nash, Johnck & Seeger, Jane Grabhorn's Colt Press, and Albert Sperisen's Black Vine Press.…

A reprint of Thomas Gray's famous poem. "Critique and Comment" by David Anderson. Back colophon: "Designed and printed by Johnck & Seeger, 447 Sansome Street, San Francisco, California, in the month of December, nineteen hundred and twenty-eight. Hand-set in Cloister Lightface type. Presswork by Lawton Kennedy. Decorations by W. R. Cameron. Two hundred and fifty copies; This is Number 68." Thomas Gray (1716-1771) was an English poet and scholar who is perhaps best-known for his Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard. It was an immediate success upon its initial publication in 1751 among critics and the general public alike. Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard is a rumination upon death and remembrance. In the poem, an unnamed narrator commemorates the "obscure," the country poor, who are buried in what many scholars have concluded is the churchyard of Church of St. Giles, Stoke Poges. However, the narrator (whom many scholars believe is a reflection of Gray) laments that these people, through forces outside of their control, are largely forgotten and begins to ponder if he will be remembered after he passes.
