Finnish design jewelry really took off in the 1950s, when names like Bertel Gardberg, Eero Rislakki, Elis Kauppi, Börje Rajalin, Paula Häiväoja, and Jan Salakari introduced new ideas and helped build Finland's international reputation in the 1960s. Today, contemporary jewelry is less tied to national identity and draws more from global influences. The authors include goldsmith Esko Timonen, internationally recognized jewelry expert Ulla Tillander-Godenhielm, collectors Helena and Lars Pahlman, Finnish design jewelry specialist Tuula Poutasuo, and Päivi Ruutiainen, who has written her doctoral dissertation on contemporary jewelry.
