Lapie (1779-1850) was a French cartographer and engraver. He was the father of cartographer Alexandre Emile Lapie. Lapie was a Colonel in the French army, where he worked in the corps of topographical engineers. He worked closely with his son and published works together and individually. The work of Lapie and his son was influential on German commercial map making in the 19th century. Works by Lapie are held in the collection of the Library of Congress. #33918.…

Large engraved wall-map laid down on cartographic linen (40 x 31 2/8 inches) in 32 sections, the title within a large decorative cartouche lower right by Jean-Michel Moreau, and featuring an Amazon with an Alligator, a cherub and angel fly above her, and a horse and a cornucopia appear opposite, with fine original hand-colour in outline. With the engraved label of Ch. Picquet on the verso with title in manuscript. A fine and attractive map of South America drawn in 1809 and based on the maps of La Cruz, Jefferys and others, by Pierre Lapie, a Colonel in the Imperial Corps of Engineers. Principally showing the Portuguese and Spanish possessions dividing the continent in two at a time when Napoleon's brother Joseph was on the Spanish throne and war raged in the Iberian Peninsula between Britain (and their Spanish and Portuguese allies) and France. Britain was the ultimate victor in 1814 when Napoleon abdicated. However the effects of the battle were felt in Europe and America for many decades to come: leading to the independence of many of Spain's American colonies and the independence of Brazil from Portugal in 1822.
