Condición: FINE. First printing. An anthology containing works by relatively unknown young Black poets. Includes significant selection of poems by Charles Cooper (his first appearance in print), Kattie M. Cumbo, Julia Fields, Carole Gregory, William J. Harris, Lance Jeffers, Alicia Loy Johnson, James Arlington Jones, and Richard W. Thomas. While it notes that most of these poets had been published to some extent, most had not had as many poems published as were included here, and all are under the age of 50. Their work was part of a collective explosion of African-American creativity that defined the era's literary landscape. Lance Jeffers (1919Ð1985) whose work was known for it exploration of the African American experience went on to publish many volumes of poetry; Julia Fields, who was championed by Langston Hughes also published several influential collections as well as an award-winning childrenÕs book; William J. Harris was both a prolific poet and leading scholar on Amiri Baraka. Each section is preceded by a brief biographical note on the poet. The Lotus Press, an important engine behind the Black Arts Movement, was opened by Naomi Long Madgett after recognizing the need for artistic and powerful poetry publishing in the Black community. Having started the press in 1972, the Lotus Press is recognized as the 2nd oldest black-owned press in the United States. The press has now merged with the Broadside Press, the oldest black-owned press in the United States.

Soft cover. Condición: Very good. No jacket. Bin 3. First edition. Inscribed by the poet. Includes a Cal State Long Beach newspaper-- one of the Colleges Jeffers taught at-- with another message written, presumably to a friend on the front. A few tanned pages from the newspaper. Jeffers was a black Nationalist who really ended up in the periphery the Black Nationalist movement in the 60s. This might have been due to his growing up on his white grandfather's farm in Nebraska, then moving at ten to San Francisco to be with his mother. He was an academic who taught in colleges beginning in the early 50s, until his death in 1985.

Very scarce booklet of poetry and other writings by African-American authors including Quincy Troupe, Stanley Crouch and Eric Priestly among others. The book was "dedicated to Thaddeus Morgan Brevard Better known in Watts as 'Fats', 'Watts Fats; 'Fats' was shot nine times by the L. A. Police Department on November 14, 1967 while on his knees." Pages are clean and unmarked, lightly toned. There is significant wear along the spine edge of the booklet and the front and back covers are both partially detached. Front cover is clean and the back cover shows just a few light water spots. There are also a couple of light creases in the upper left corner of the back cover.
