Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. First Edition. Small 8vo. Pp. x, 261. Frontis. photo with tissue guard. Illustrated with plates and portraits. Illustrated with many photos. Bound in tan buckram with gilt lettering and design on front cover, and stylized gilt lettering on spine. The cloth used for the covers was treated with a g…lossy finish, which has degraded at the edges. Dust soiling on top edge, and a former owner name in pencil on the front free-endpaper. Despite those factors, the book remains sturdily bound.Inscribed by Mary Probasco Nipgen, the author of the prologue and two other poems, who was a member of a prominent Chillicothe family. A scarce history of the Ohio city that served as the state's first capital, and its third. Essays on historical subjects by a variety of writers comprise the volume, as well as a few poems germane to the history of the city. Inscription, dated 1896, reads, "With Loving Remembrances from [signed] Mary P. Nipgen, December 25, 1896." While the Nipgens appear to have been Chillicothe civic leaders, they were active in the town of Nipgen, which is about 15 miles south of Chillicothe. Nipgen was first called Coopersville, and at some point was known as Possum Trot, then in 1896, the very year the book at hand was published, was renamed Nipgen in honor of John A. Nipgen of Chillicothe.
