Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book chronicles the history of the San Carlos Mission in Monterey, California, particularly from its founding in 1770 to the dismantling of California's mission system in the 1830s. The author weaves together historical events, insights from the writings of Junipero Serra and other Franciscan missionaries, and accounts from visitors who witnessed the mission's heyday. The book illuminates religion's role in the colonization and settlement of California, while also touching on the cultural exchange between Native Americans and Spanish missionaries. The exploration of the mission system's end in secularization offers a nuanced perspective on the complexities of governance and cultural preservation. Through archival research, vivid first-hand accounts, and evocative descriptions, this book provides a comprehensive and engaging narrative of this significant historical site.
