The author believes that this system was fundamentally flawed from its inception and doomed to fail. Although the author acknowledges that the original intent of the transportation system was for the rehabilitation of the convicts, the author goes on to demonstrate how, throughout its implementation, the system became increasingly focused on the exploitation of prisoners for the economic benefit of the administration. The author ultimately believes that forced labor and abusive policies are counterproductive in the rehabilitation of convicts, and that a humane, methodical approach, focused on the well-being and reform of the prisoners, would be a much more effective approach to penal justice.
