One panoramic silver gelatin photograph on textured matte finish paper, sized 32.5 x 8.5 in., location & date information, photographer's imprint w/in negative at lower black blank fore-edge in white, w/ original black wooden frame, 33.5 x 9.25 in., framer's label on back for Meier & Frank in silver & black, w/ original glass, a NF exemplar. This striking and very scarce original panoramic photograph depicts 84 African-American freemasons who were members of the California Jurisdiction Prince Hall Grand Lodge Free & Accepted Masons at the 86th Annual Communication held in Portland, Oregon July 14-18, 1940. Since the total African-American population in the Portland Area at the time was perhaps 1900, this photo represents about 5% of the very small percentage in the local area at the end of the Great Depression. Prince Hall Grand Lodges were first organized in 1887 in Portland, and through World War II, Jurisdiction Lodges included California, Washington, North Carolina, South Carolina, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Ohio & Oklahoma, with frequent discussions and disputes over assessments, taxes, and other finances benefiting other Grand Lodge jurisdictions not residing in Oregon. The Jurisdiction of California Free & Accepted Masons was first established as the Excelsior Lodge No. 23 in 1914, and would continue to operate as "Grand Lodge" until July, 1944 when the Jurisdiction Lodges changed their names to read "The Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge" for the purpose of later combating unrecognized Masonry among African-Americans during the explosive growth of an estimated 23,000 Black workers drawn to the Kaiser shipyards during World War II, and confined to living in Albina and Vanport in North Portland. African-Americans were attracted to fraternal organizations for mutual community support in the Pacific Northwest mirroring the fraternal and social organizations of the dominant Eurocaucasian population, largely because of extreme racism, and exclusionary policies in Oregon, and Washington through World War II. As of 1940, there were less than 2000 African-Americans residing in Portland, and due to extreme housing covenant regulations, Black populations were prevented from owning, or living in a significant majority of the Portland neighborhoods, as well as policies which emerged during the Ku Klux Klan dominant period of the 1920's preventing, or discouraging, Black-owned businesses. Portland City leaders and business leaders enforced severe segregation, mounted signs reading "Whites Only" throughout the city, and new black residents clashed with the historically small population, which would only change after the 1945 arrival of Bill Berry and the Urban League, and subsequent Vanport flood disaster. This cataloguer was unable to locate original newspaper notices of the Grand Communication in the Oregon Journal, or Oregonian, and there does appear to have been some historic confusion as to whether the Excelsior Lodge believed to have been on Wheeler, was later combined with the Enterprise Lodge at 116 NE Russell in Portland, OR. There are also no surviving copies of the Oregon Freemason "Masonic Analyst" which largely reflected the Eurocaucasian Grand Lodge of Oregon activities from 1940-1943, and no similar publications for the Prince Hall Masonic Halls in and around Portland. Aldrich (1876-1954) was a Tacoma, WA based classical music symphony conductor in the first 25 years of the 20th Century, who moved to Portland, OR by 1930 where he established his photo studio in the Hollywood District where he would operate until his death.
