Añadir al carritoSoft cover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition of Arnost Dvorak's landmark work of Czech avant-garde theater, published in Prague in 1923 by Cin. 8vo (5.75 × 7.75 inches), original pictorial wrappers, 113 pages. Cover design and three scenographic illustrations by Jiri Kroha. An exceptional association copy, inscribed by Dvořák to the Czech-American composer Jaromír Weinberger, dated Prague, May 15, 1923: "Drahému příteli Jaromíru Weinbergerovi vždy a zcela věrný Arnošt Dvořák" — "To my dear friend Jaromír Weinberger, always and wholly devoted, Arnošt Dvořák." An exceptional association copy linking two important figures of interwar Czech theater. Weinberger composed incidental music for Dvořák's Husité (1922) and Bílá hora (1924); the warmly personal inscription falls directly between these collaborations, several years before the international success of Weinberger's Schwanda the Bagpiper. Dvorak's warm "to my dear friend" and declaration of loyalty push the inscription beyond conventional authorial presentation. Dated to 1923, the year of publication, it places the book in Weinberger's hands during the period of their collaborative and experimental theatrical activity. Kroha's celebrated design for Nová Oresteia belongs to the radical Czech theatrical avant-garde of the early 1920s, his work for the production combining Expressionist, Constructivist and Dadaist elements. The wrapper is itself recognized as an important example of Czech book design and is represented in the Smithsonian Libraries' Czech Book Covers collection, where it is classified under Poetism. A highly fragile copy requiring careful handling: Binding loose; light bumping and chipping to fore edge. Contents clean and bright. Front wrapper split; some bumping and chipping, with 1.5" closed tear to the lower left. Moderate rubbing and soiling to rear wrapper. Open tears to spine and outer edge of rear wrapper. Complete, retaining the original Kroha wrapper and all three illustrations. A significant presentation copy whose Dvořák-Weinberger association substantially outweighs its compromised physical condition. Jiri Kroha (ilustrador). Inscribed by Author(s).…

Añadir al carritoSoft cover. Condición: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Quarto 28x19 cm., wrappers. 5 issues (Year I, issues 1-5; all published): April-November 1921. Each issue a bifolium (4 pp.), except No. 2 (May), 8 pp., with an original woodcut insert by Jiří Kroha as a promotion. The woodcut is a full size 28x19 cm. A rare complete survival of this short-lived Czech avant-garde theatre bulletin, issued by the association Socialistická scéna, which was active in the immediate post WW1 period. The group—associated with figures such as Jiří Kroha, Karel M. Klos, and Karel Hugo Hilar among others—sought to develop a new form of politically engaged "mass theatre," aligned with the revolutionary socialist climate of the early 1920s. The striking woodcut masthead is used throughout and the separately issued placard present here by Kroha—later a major figure of Czech modernist architecture and scenography—embody the synthesis of visual art, typography, and political messaging characteristic of the movement. Published as a monthly organ, the periodical in practice appeared only irregularly, with four consecutive issues (April-July) followed by a final number in November. It combines programmatic essays, organizational reports, and theoretical reflections on modern stage practice, documenting an important moment of transition between prewar theatrical traditions and the emerging Czech avant-garde. The bulletin Socialistická scéna ceased after 1921 as the organization itself entered a period of reorientation and consolidation. Activities continued under shifting structures and, significantly, under the related title Všelidová scéna ("People's Stage"), reflecting a broader ambition to reach a wider public beyond strictly socialist circles. The discontinuation of Socialistická scéna group thus appears to have been less a cessation than a transition into new organizational and ideological forms, still shaped by financial instability, limited membership resources, and the rapidly evolving landscape of left-wing cultural movements in the early interwar Czechoslovakia. Truly uncommon, with no institutional holdings found worldwide. Jiri Kroha (ilustrador).…
