Añadir al carritoThe legendary "Baron of Books" bought out a failing bookshop named Brentano's in Chicago during the Depression, merged it into Kroch's & Brentano's and created a midwest bookselling empire that ruled the new bookselling world for decades and modernized its practices. TNS, 1p, 8½" X 11", Chicago, IL, 10 September 1987. Addressed to a Chicago publisher. Very good. Staple holes at upper left. On "Kroch's & Brentano's letterhead, the bookselling baron asks this publisher Chicago's small Bonus Books for review copies of three of his better-selling sports books ("Parcells," "Ditka" and "On Sports"). Usual small but bold full signature in black ballpoint. Cohodes types a brief response at the foot of this letter. Kroch's thumb's up at his stores could make a title a bestseller, so a review copy request from him would be sure to fall on happy ears.

Añadir al carritoFirst edition of this collection of tributes from authors and others in the book industry of the Book Table Luncheon Group to celebrate Knopf's 25th anniversary as a publisher. Octavo, original green cloth with paper titles, with frontispiece of Knopf. In near fine condition. The Book Table Luncheon Group was a social and professional gathering organized by Alfred A. Knopf during the mid-twentieth century, bringing together authors, editors, critics, and other figures from the literary world. These luncheons functioned as an extension of Knopfâs Book Table publication, fostering dialogue around literature and publishing while strengthening the houseâs reputation as not merely a business but a cultural institution. Frontispiece photograph by Carl Van Vechten. Housed in a custom pictorial slipcase. Alfred A. Knopf (1892â"1984) was a pioneering American publisher whose firm, founded in 1915, became renowned for its commitment to literary quality, elegant design, and international scope. His publishing house quickly established itself as a leading force in modern American letters by introducing U.S. readers to both major foreign authors and distinguished American voices, marked by Knopfâs exacting editorial standards and attention to bookmaking as a craft. The commemorative volume Alfred A. Knopf: Quarter Century, 1915â"1940 reflects on the firmâs first twenty-five years, documenting its influential role in shaping twentieth-century literary culture and highlighting its reputation for sophistication, intellectual seriousness, and a cosmopolitan sensibility.
