Gregorio Leti was a seventeenth-century European writer of great popularity. His books of biographies, general histories and writings on the papacy were widely read and translated into many languages. Born in Milan and educated in a Jesuit school, Leti resisted the attempts of his uncle, the Bishop of Acquapendente in Umbria, to interest him in pursuing a profession in the church and instead chose to travel and write. He lived in the court of King Louis XIV in France and later in the court of King Charles II, who commissioned him to write a history of England. Leti was elected to the Royal Society, but had to flee England because of changing political climates. He died in Amsterdam in 1701.

Leti (1630-1701), a well-traveled man of letters, was a popular writer throughout Europe and the author of works as various as satirical anti-papal articles and a biography of Queen Elizabeth.

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. No Jacket. Oversized hardcover. Bound in gray cloth with a black square on spine, gold lettering and detailing across the square. Overall neat and tidy, only very slight fading on black square and a few spots of discoloration to hinges. No lettering is disrupted, no stains or damage to structural integrity. Title page dated 1989. Copyright page dated only 1989. 1315 pages. Last few pages (starting at 1303) have very faint water damage around edges, just a mild stain. None touches the text block or significantly warps the page. Stamp on front free endpaper reads "Discarded by USDA, ARS, National Agricultural Library." Pages are otherwise clean, crisp, and bright.
