Hardcover. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Fine. Private Realms of Light: Amateur Photography in Canada/1839-1940; edited by Lilly Koltun; written by members of the National Photography Collection Public Archives Canada: Andrew J. Birrell, Peter Robinson, Lilly Koltun, Andrew C. Rodger, Joan M. Schwartz; foreword by… Yousuf Karsh; Fitzhenry & Whiteside, Markham ON, 1984. Signed by Lilly Koltun. From the blurb For many years a vague belief circulated among photography buffs and photo-researchers to the effect that in the early days there had grown up in Canada a remarkable body of talented amateur photographers, whose work was now lost, but who in their day had far surpassed in artistic sensitivity, in technical skill, and in innovative boldness the work of their professional contemporaries. In 1977 a team of researchers at Public Archives Canada set out to test the validity of this belief, to track down any photos that might still be preserved in forgotten drawers and attics, and to restore to public awareness and admiration this forgotten legacy. AS collection after collection emerged from its obscure place of refuge all doubt about the importance of the amateur in the history of Canadian photography vanished. The earliest stop-action snapshots, the earliest colour photographs, the earliest art photography, the earliest mini-camera work all appeared as the achievements of amateurs. By any standards of technical skill, artistic judgement, or spirit of innovation, amateurs were clearly a moving force in the history of photography in Canada. From the thousands of images that came to light the research team chose 197, which were organized into an exhibition first shown at the Public Archives in 1983. This book reproduces these works, but more than this it offers the first detailed history of the development of amateur photography in Canada, written by the members of the National Photography Collection who undertook this remarkable artistic treasure hunt. This large format book, 335 pages measuring 324mm X 231mm is in fine condition in a fine dust jacket that is now in a protective mylar wrap. This large volume may require additional postage.
