Paperback. Condición: New. How close do we dare to get to Jesus' Sermon on the Mount? It's widely considered the key to understanding who Jesus was and what mission he strove to fulfill. For two millennia, countless people have wrestled to apply it, from Augustine to Luther to Tolstoy to Gandhi. Alongside much wisdom, there has been much evasion, prompting Jewish theologian Pinchas Lapide's tart comment: "The history of the impact of the Sermon on the Mount can largely be described in terms of an attempt to domesticate everything in it that is shocking, demanding, and uncompromising, and render it harmless." There's good reason for this: Jesus' teaching is deeply disruptive. It demands a top-to-bottom reordering of life, work, and social relations,?starting with radical economic sharing, nonresistance and love of enemies, lifelong marriage, and unconditional forgiveness. This issue of Plough Quarterly focuses on people willing to get their hands dirty living out the Sermon on the Mount. Their ranks include Dorothy Day, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, John Wesley, Henri Nouwen, Mother Teresa, and others you'll meet in these pages. Their insights are not to be consumed passively. Rather, they should inspire and equip each of us to roll up our sleeves and get to work.Bold, hope-filled, and down-to-earth, Plough Quarterly features thought-provoking articles, commentary, interviews, short fiction, book reviews, poetry and artwork to inspire everyday faith and action. Each issue brings together essential voices from many traditions to give you fresh insights on a core theme such as peacemaking, biblical justice, children and family, building community, man and woman, nature and the environment, nonviolence, or simple living. Starting from the conviction that the teachings and example of Jesus can transform and renew our world, it aims to apply them to all aspects of life, seeking common ground with all people of goodwill regardless of creed. …

Soft cover. Condición: Near Fine. Fundamentally a dramatic artist, Käthe Kollwitz (1867-1945) brought to each of her works an uncanny ability to evoke human emotions through subtle gestures and facial expressions. The reactions of her characters were psychologically true primarily because she tested them on herself. The present collection contains 83 of Mrs. Kollwitz's finest works, including the last great print cycles: "The Weavers" of 1898; "The Peasant War" of 1908; "War" of 1925; and "Death" of 1935. These selections provide a full panorama of Mrs. Kollwitz's development as a master of the graphic techniques of etching, woodcutting and lithography. Over 69 of the illustrations have been rephotographed from the original works specially for this edition, and new techniques in photolithography and a larger format have resulted in reproductions that are as close as possible to the prints and drawings themselves. This is a used book. Pages are clean and bright with no markings, notes, or highlighting. Page edges show light foxing. Covers show only minor shelf wear; stress creases on front cover. No owner's marks or bookplates, not ex-library. Binding is tight and square. Corners lightly bumped. An excellent reading copy. Note that oversized or heavier books may require additional postage.…

Paperback. Condición: Good. 2nd. xxxii pages, 75 plates; 35 cm. First published, 1951. Revised and Enlarged Edition. Good+. Firm binding, clean inside copy. Moderate shelfwear to wraps, age toning. OVERSIZE! Additional shipping charges may be requested for international & priority orders. Large-format book. 83 illustrations. *** "'The Weavers,' a landmark of class-conscious art, which depicts, in a series of prints, the plight of the worker and his age-long struggle to better his lot. 'Death as a Friend,' showing a man greeting his death as an old friend, with a hysterical mixture of joy and terror. 'The People,' in which a mother shields her offspring from phantoms of hate, poverty, and ignorance -- and symbolizes woman as creator, begetter of the human race, link between past and future. These works represent the recurrent themes which most characterize the work of Käthe Kollwitz: social consciousness and a sense of the suffering of mankind, an urge to voice the basic maternal attitude, and a preoccupation with death. She has been called a propagandist, a crusader, yet her art is essentially apolitical. Her concern was not with partisan causes, but rather with universal rights. Fundamentally a dramatic artist, Käthe Kollwitz (1867-1945) brought to each of her works an uncanny ability to evoke human emotions through subtle gestures and facial expressions. The reactions of her characters were psychologically true primarily because she tested them on herself.
