Indeed, it is a fact that 'we think only in signs' (Peirce: 1931-58, II.302). These signs can have the shape of sounds, images, objects, acts or flavours. Since these things do not have an intrinsic meaning, we have to give them a meaning so that they can become signs. Peirce states that 'Nothing is a sign unless it is interpreted as a sign' (Peirce: 1931-58, II.172). This means that everything can become a sign as long as it 'signifies' something - refers to or stands for 'something other than itself' (Chandler: 1995). Our interpretation of signs is an unconscious process in our minds as we constantly relate the signs we experience to a system of conventions that is familiar to us.This system of conventions and the use of signs in general is what semiotics is about. There are three major models that give a detailed explanation of the constitution of a sign; these are the models of Ferdinand de Saussure's, Charles Sanders Peirce's and Karl Bühler's model. At first, they will be presented in detail and secondly, there will be a brief discussion about them.

Throughout his life he has written a lot of works that impressed people. One of these works is the poem 'Ode to the West Wind' which was written in 1819. This paper is about 'Ode to the West Wind' and gives information on it, such as its outer appearance. It focuses on how Shelley describes the 'wind' and which symbols he uses in this poem.First some information about the term 'ode' itself. The ode is a lyric poem with great length that deals with a 'lofty theme in a dignified manner '. There are three types of English odes: the Pindaric, the Cowley and the Horation ode. The Pindaric Ode is a ceremonious poem with Pindar's style. Pindar was 'a Greek professional lyrist of the 5th century BC. He employed the triadic structure of Stesichorus, [.] consisting of a strophe [.] followed by a metrically harmonious antistrophe, concluding with a summary line in a different metre. ' The most important odes were those of Abraham Cowley and Andrew Marvell. Marvell, for example, used 'a simple and regular stanza [.] modelled on Horace' with the rhyme scheme aabb; the first two lines had four stresses, whereas the last two lines had only three stresses. Cowley wrote Pindaric odes 'which had irregular patterns of line lengths and rhyme schemes, though they were iambic.' Shelley's Ode is of the Horation type; in it he describes the activities of the west wind on earth, on the sea and also in the sky. He also expresses 'his envy for the boundless freedom of the west wind, and his wish to be free like the wind and to scatter his words among mankind'.

Jahrhundert und wurde vermutlich (in den Jahren) um 1185 geschrieben. In diesem Jahrhundert dominierte überwiegend Frankreich das kulturelle Leben. Dort entstand auch der um 1160 anonym verfasste mittelalterliche Roman d Eneas, welcher Veldeke wohl als Vorlage für seine Dichtung diente. Diese Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit Heinrichs von Veldeke `Eneasroman , vor allem im Hinblick auf die zahlreichen Monologe, die in ihm zu finden sind. Das Hauptaugenmerk wird dabei jedoch ausschließlich auf den zahlreichen Minnemonologen liegen, die einen großen Teil des Werks einnehmen. Die Minnemonologe werden von Dido, Lavinia und Eneas gesprochen. Diese Charaktere sind im Werk eng miteinander verknüpft: die beiden Frauen Dido und Lavinia empfinden Minne für Eneas. Dieser wiederum hat ausschließlich Gefühle für Lavinia.

Person Singular. Aber, und das kann ich nun auch noch nach 10 Semestern über meine Arbeit sagen, sie enthält wahnsinnig gute Informationen über Storms Werk und ist für einen allgemeinen Einstieg in das Werk sicherlich besser als zahlreiche unverständliche Reclam-Heftchen. :-)Infos - entnommen aus der Einleitung:Theodor Storms Novelle 'Immensee' wurde in der jetzigen Fassung zum ersten Mal 1851 in den 'Sommergeschichten und Liedern' veröffentlicht. Mit 'Immensee' ist ihm meiner Meinung nach ein Meisterwerk der Literatur gelungen. Storm hat eine wunderbare künstlerische Technik, seine Novelle ist voll von Symbolen und Motiven. Auch Hermann Engelhard hat dies erkannt, als er schrieb, dass sich 'die Verwendung solcher Symbole [manchmal] bis zu vollendeter Kunst [steigert]' (Engelhard, Hermann: Theodor Storm. Gedichte Märchen Novellen, S. 41).Aus diesem Grund habe ich es mir zur Aufgabe gemacht, die zahlreichen Symbole, wie Tiere und Pflanzen, aber auch die Gedichte, die sich durch die ganze Novelle hindurchziehen und somit einen roten Faden bilden, in meiner Seminararbeit zu bearbeiten. Um verständlich vorangehen zu können, werde ich meine Seminararbeit in drei Teilgebiete unterteilen und die Novelle systematisch durchgehen. Beginnen möchte ich mit der Rahmenerzählung, in der der Alte in seinem Zimmer sitzt und sich an seine Jugendzeit erinnert. Als nächstes werde ich versuchen, die Gedichte und Lieder in 'Immensee' zu interpretieren, was wichtig ist um die Erinnerungen des Alten und damit die Novelle an sich, verstehen zu können. Ausgehend von diesem Wissen werde ich auf weitere Symbole, auf die wir in 'Immensee' stoßen, eingehen und sie anhand von Sekundärliteratur, deren Wahrheitsgehalt ich anhand meiner eigenen Empfindungen untersuchen möchte, erläutern.
