Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: As New. Estado de la sobrecubierta: As New. 1st Edition. As new condition black boards with gold spine lettering contained in an as new condition non price-clipped color illustrated dust jacket. Includes List of Other Books by William J. Bennett; Author Dedication; Introduction: A Moment of Clarity and Conclusion: Why Do We Fight? "The events of September 11, 2001, were an unforgettable tragedy, but they also revealed that the spirit of America is strong and undiminished. Not since the shocking attack on Pearl Harbor has the nation pulled together with such unity and purpose, resolving to endure whatever hardships may be necessary to win the war on terror. We were united in the defense of and belief in our country. It truly brought out the best in our national character. But a small group of influential public intellectuals, writers, members of the media, and academics were not part of this unified response. They still preached the same self-doubt about America and her traditions that has steadily undermined our national confidence and resolve in recent decades. Within days of the attacks this debilitating mindset was in evidence, as influential figures rushed to point the finger at America and decry what they were sure would be our murderous and indiscriminate reaction. While most Americans remain confident of the justice and appropriateness of our military response in Afghanistan, these vocal critics have caused some to wonder whether we brought the attacks on ourselves because of our foreign policy, our popular culture, or our support for Israel. As we enter the next phase of what will undoubtedly be a protracted and dangerous struggle - a war ulike any other in our history - it is more important that ever to respond to these doubts and objections and to preserve the patriotic ardor seen in the wake of September 11. In clear, compelling, straightforward language, William Bennett takes up and refutes the many myths and misconceptions about America's character and role in world affairs that have become fashionable among our nation's elites. The morning of September 12 dawned with a stunning moral clarity that has guided the actions of many Americans, both her leaders and her citizens. Bennett seeks to preserve that clarity in order to ensure that our national resolve does not falter in this difficult and necessary war." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps. King, Amy C. (jacket design); Oriolo, Richard (book design) (ilustrador). …

Attempted to say "merci beaucoup" and accidentally complimented someone's physique? Been overlooked at the boulangerie due to your adherence to the bizarre foreign custom of waiting in line? Well, you're not alone. The internationally bestselling author of A Year in the Merde and In the Merde for Love has been there too, and he is here to help. In Talk to the Snail, Stephen Clarke distills the fruits of years spent in the French trenches into a truly handy (and hilarious) book of advice. Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Fine. 1st Edition. Fine condition black boards, black cloth spine, black front cover letter, & red and silver spine lettering contained in a fine condition non price-clipped color photographic dust jacket. Includes List of Other Books by Thomas C. Renner; Authors' Dedications; Introduction; Epilogue: Lure of the Informer; Appendix; Index and About the Authors. "A courageous double expose of life in the Mafia and life in the Witness Protection Program. I was especially intrigued by mobster-turned-informer Joe Cantalupo's glimpse into the secret world of the late Mafia don, Joseph Columbo. Another triumph for veteran Mafia observer Thomas Renner." - John H. Davis, author. "With the publication of Body Mike, Tom Renner has produced another valuable contribution to the popular understanding of organized criminal activity, thus demonstrating once again why he is rightfully acknowledged to be the dean of investigative reporter/Mob biographers. Body Mike provides the reader with critical insights into the Cosa Nostra turbulence of the seventies and, as in Nick Pileggi's Wiseguy, artfully explains the fascinating phenomenon of how Mob associates can at the same time have a dozen money-making scams operatng and yet walk around penniless." - Ronald Goldstock, Director New York State Orgainized Crime Task Force. "A piercing look inside the greedy, grubby, vain and violent mind of the Mob. It's a world where no man can be trusted to keep his word, not even the Feds. A gripping primer for anyone who wants to know what the Mafia is really like." - Jim Polk, NBC News, National Investigative Correspondent. "Tome Renner has once again probed La Cosa Nostra and exposed its Machiavellian inner workings. Body Mike will become a classic text in the dymanmics of organized crime. Renner has once again proven why he is the capo de tutti capi of investigative reporters." - Frederick T. Martens, Executive Director Pennsylvania Crime Commission. "Body Mike offers a chilling look into the frightening reality of organized crime through the eyes of someone who has lived through it. Joseph Cantalupo proved to be an invaluable asset in our effort to run the Peerless Importer organization out of Arizona, subsequently blocking its spread throughout the West." - Robert Corbin, Arizona Attorney General. "Joseph Cantalupo was like a son to crime leader Joseph Colombo. He became personal notary to "chairman of the board" Carlo Gambino. He did business in partnership with Genovese crime-family boss Frank "Funzi" Tieri. Cantalupo was a young guy on his way up, a hustler confidant of top value to the Mafia - and to the FBI. Body Mike presents the startling, real-life mob revelations of Joseph Cantalupo, the most effective "wiseguy" informant in years, written in collaboration with Thomas C. Renner, best-selling coauthor of Vincent Teresa's My Life in the Mafia and Antoinette Giancanna's Mafia Princess. When the assassination of Joseph Colombo left a frightening power vacuum, Cantalupo succumbed to FBI pressure and agreed to serve as an undercover agent and state's witness against Mafia kingpins. For six years he wore a body mike in compromising situations and recorded incriminating conversations in secret late-night drives in his bugged Lincoln. He was an essential player in New York crime-buster Rudolph Giuliani's campaign to break the control of the Mafia, testifying in the Colombo family racketeering and the Commission trials, which put Mafia bosses in jail. In an unsparing expose, Joe Cantalupo takes you deep into real life and death - in the world of organized crime. Cantalupo saw it all and tells all: the gang rubouts, real estate scams, loansharking, heists, Mafia weddings and funerals. A marked man, he writes about the unsettling, often terrifying world of the informer, about living under the Witness Protection Program after his testimony and about his frustrated attempts to lead a normal life undercover." - excerpt from the inner front jacket flap. King, William Douglas (jacket photograph); Aquan, Richard L. (jacket design); Vandeventer, J. (book design) (ilustrador).…

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Very Good+ dj. First Edition. (price-clipped) [very slight bumping at several corners, no other significant wear to book; the jacket shows a bit of wear at the upper extremities, light surface rubbing (mostly to rear panel), and has a 1/2" tear and associated minor creasing at the bottom front flapfold]. (B&W photographs) The photographic history of one of the most successful advertising campaigns of all time, which consisted of a series of ravishing photos of some of the world's most famous and elegant women -- among them Lauren Bacall, Joan Crawford, Judy Garland, Marlene Dietrich, Barbara Stanwyck, Claudette Colbert, Bette Davis, Barbra Streisand, Lillian Hellman, Liza Minnelli, Helen Hayes and a couple of dozen more, each swathed in Blackgama mink coats or wraps -- a campaign unimaginable today, for several reasons. The earlier photographs in the series, from 1968-1972, were taken by Richard Avedon; Bill King took over the chores in 1972. In his text, Peter Rogers (who implemented the campaign as assistant to its designer, Jane Trahey) tells the behind-the-scenes stories of the various photo shoots, focusing on "the sometimes scandalous, sometimes serene behavior of our most admired women." (There was one man involved as well, legendary dancer Rudolf Nureyev, who was photographed together with Martha Graham and Dame Margot Fonteyn. However, on the page of the book where the photo of the trio was supposed to appear is this explanatory note: "For unknown reasons, Mr. Nureyev refused permission to reproduce the photograph." Bitch!) The hardcover issue of this book is much more uncommon than the paperback. Illustrated by (dj design) Barry Littmann (ilustrador).…
