This Royal Decree marks a pivotal moment in South American history, formally granting Buenos Aires commercial and judicial autonomy from the Viceroyalty of Peru and stimulating the economic development of the region. Crucially for American collections, the decree is associated with Diego de Gardoqui, the Spanish envoy who famously channeled vital financial support to George Washington during the American Revolution. Furthermore, the document possesses a direct link to the intellectual origins of Argentine independence: it established the position of Secretary, a post first held by Manuel Belgrano, who used the Consulado as a platform to promote free trade, education, and agriculture years before the May Revolution of 1810. Quarto, bound in full red contemporary velvet covered boards with two metal clasps, containing five illuminated leaves, two fully illuminated in color with the Royal coat of arms and portrait of King Charles II, text in Spanish. Signed by King Charles II, Â"Yo el Rey" and additionally signed by several Royal secretaries. Bound with a printed manuscript of the Oath of Fidelity to the King of Spain with Royal stamps dated 1701 and with two autograph letters laid in, the first dated September 17, 1701 and signed by Philip V, and the second addressed to the Marquis.
