Very Good in Wrappers. 9780520262171. 258 pages. paperback. keywords: Film. DESCRIPTION - Satyajit Ray is the South Asian filmmaker most likely to appear on lists of great directors of the world, along with Kurosawa, Godard, Tarkovsky, EIsenstain, Ozu, Antonioni, et. al. Ray's films are revered, but lately it is Bollywood, rather than Ray's more serious cinema, that has gotten more attention. Unlike his peers on the lists of all-time-greats he is usually discussed by critics in a nationalist context: as an Indian filmmaker rather than a modernist filmmaker, an avant-garde filmmaker, or a filmmaker whose influence was felt in Europe and North America. Ganguly aims to rethink Ray in an international, modernist context. The book selects Ray's most important films for close readings that focus on Ray as a modernist craftsman, and on how his stories of Indian men and women, whether urban or rural, old or young, conventional or rebellious, reflect modernists' concerns about human relations. inventory #37719.

Añadir al carritoHardback. Condición: New. Although revered as one of the world's great filmmakers, the Indian director Satyajit Ray is described either in narrowly nationalistic terms or as an artist whose critique of modernity is largely derived from European ideas. Rarely is he seen as an influential modernist in his own right whose contributions to world cinema remain unsurpassed. In this benchmark study, Keya Ganguly situates Ray's work within the internationalist spirit of the twentieth century, arguing that his film experiments revive the category of political or 'committed' art. She suggests that in their depictions of Indian life, Ray's films intimate the sense of a radical future and document the capacity of the image to conceptualize a different world glimpsed in the remnants of a disappearing past.
