Scarce original printing of this electrical engineering text; the author was an important professor of electrical engineering in Europe, the first to specialize in that field, at the Institut Electrotechnique Montfiore in Liège; he was also one of the founders of the International Electrotechnical Commission and earlier taught at the School of Mines at Liège. The book, translated from the fourth French edition, has omitted chapters on European machinery, which at the time differed substantially from American, replacing them with chapters by Charles P. Steinmetz on hysteresis and molecular magnetic friction, Dr. Cary T. Hutchinson on units and dimensions, Dr. A. E. Kennelly on impedence and the theory of alternating current. Hardcover, full navy cloth, as pictured. Shows some wear, head & foot of spine rubbed & lightly paint-sprayed, corners rubbed, hinges tender; minor damage to a few page corners, hint of moisture to fore-edge, with a few page edges lightly cockled. Text clean; xii, 392 pages; index, equations, figures. Bears the stamp & signature of Herbert T. Hills of Salt Lake City on free endsheet, dated June 1898, and the ink name & sign of his son Louis. The elder Hills was an early graduate of the University of Utah's engineering department who worked for the US Surveyor General before meeting his death in 1905 at the age of 29 in a freak accident: he picked up a steel surveying tape which was in contact with a live wire bringing current to a disused mine and was instantly electrocuted.
