One of the most vividly bizarre and convoluted of the Elite/Toga titles, this one a full on Juvenile Delinquent tour de farce with a fiery young redhead (naturally) inducted into a crazed youth gang called The Titans. Will she go for Stewart, handsome and devil-may-care with his drunkard father and his pool hall sensibilities, will slightly nerdy and besotted Eugene get his hands on her, or will she fall into the arms of lesbian ingenue Margie ("big in every way") Collins, whose ambition is to get our feisty protagonist into "The Sisterhood." It's all pretty borderline as far as anything approaching standards is concerned, but this stuff was written to push envelopes, these weren't books you kept on display alongside Capote and Mailer, these gaudy little numbers were double stacked in the bedside table, or in a cupboard next to the scotch. They promised knowledge of an imaginary underworld, that most heady and prevalent of literary landscapes, the novel length equivalent of a Hustler letter involving working after hours in a library, or being stuck in a locker room with *insert sports team of choice*. They are purely escape, but by necessity not so close to complete fantasy that they couldn't be real somewhere, at some point, because they aren't just selling sleaze; they also promise hope.
