Hardcover. 8vo. pp. xix, [i], 415, [i]. Portrait frontispiece and 6 illustrations. Figures and tables in the text. Original publisher's green cloth lettered silver on spine. Ownership signature of P. Nicholls. Several letters addressed to Professor Nicholls loosely inserted. The first, handwritten from Ann Dershowitz, a graduate… student at Penn University, dated 20 Nov 67 and consisting of about 200 words in which she requests information about Keilin for a seminar she is giving as she understands Nicholls did graduate work with Keilin. Nicholl's typewritten response dated December 1, 1967 and consisting of about 740 words is stapled to the original letter, in it he provides references and information about Keilin and says 'He was undoubtedly a great man - the only one I have known who I could put into that indefinable category.' A further handwritten letter from Ann Dershowitz dated 29 December 67 consisting of about 200 words thanks Nicholls and gives an account of how the seminar went. A typewritten signed air letter from Joan Keilin Whiteley [Keilin's daughter] to 'Dear Peter [Nicholls]' addressed to Professor P. Nicholls, Dept. of Biological Sciences, Brock University, St Catherine, Ont. Canada from 18 Clover Close, Cumnor Hill, Oxford OX2 9JH dated 10 April 1989 and consisting of about 350 words in which she says she found Nicholl's article both interesting and provocative, she goes on to criticise a particular passage and would also have liked her husband, Denys, (a theologian and tutor at Jesus College, Oxford) to argue out the tie up between various sorts of immortality. Finally she gives details of a tape she has listened to and assures Nicholls nothing has been left out. David Keilin (1887 1963) was an eminent biologist and parasitologist who was instrumental in bringing molecular biology to Cambridge. Professor Nicholls (1935-2014) was the Visiting Professor of Biological Sciences, University of Essex, UK. Fly leaves of dust-jacket and a photocopy of one of the figures loosely inserted. Front hinge cracked, otherwise very good. Light wear otherwise very good.
