R. James' "Wailing Well," A. M. Burrage's "The Sweeper," and Charles Dickens' "The Signalman." Keeping supplies atmospheric black-and-white illustrations throughout, ranging from tightly rendered narrative drawings to much more expressionistic images in which figures seem to emerge from overlapping lines, shadows, and washes. The combination is unusually effective: this is as much a Charles Keeping illustrated book as it is a ghost-story anthology. The bibliographic record confirms 142 pages for this American edition. This book appeared quite late in Keeping's career - only two years before his death in 1988 - and it is especially well suited to his darker graphic vocabulary.
