Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. Robert Anning Bell Ilustrador. Very Good; minor rubbing/bumping to extremities, with a little fraying to ends of spine; spine and edges of covers tanned; some foxing to endpapers; remnant of a sticker to rear pastedown; top edge gilt with some tarnish and soil; spots to deckle fore edges; else Fine. No dust jacket. Beautifully printed at the Chiswick Press in London. Beautifully illustrated by R.A. Bell, with his designs on the covers as well. This copy is associated with the prominent Delaware family du Pont, specifically Thomas Coleman du Pont, the great-grandson of the founder of DuPont Company and later president of the same. Laid in is a handwritten note on T.C. du Pont's letterhead, on which he copied the verses added to Keats's memorial by General Sir Vincent Eyre when he repaired it in 1875: "Keats! if thy cherished name be 'writ in water,'/Each drop has fallen from some mourner's cheek;/A sacred tribute, such as heroes seek,/Though often vain for dazzling deeds of slaughter;/Sleep on! Not honoured less for epitaph so meek!" The note is dated March 24, 1897. The half-title page has a rose leaf attached, below which the inscription "from the grave of Keats. Rome. March 24, 1897" Below this is the initials "T.F.B.", and on the first page of the table of contents is inscribed "Oct [?] '97 T.F. Bayard". Thomas Francis Bayard Jr. was a Delaware lawyer who was married to one of T.C. du Pont's cousins. Evidently du Pont and Bayard were close, and traveled together to Rome, since the inscription on the half-title page implies that Bayard collected and pasted in the rose leaf, and his is the only name actually written in the book. Probably Bayard owned the book, and du Pont gave him the note to keep in it, as a further memento of their visit to Keats's grave together. Later, in 1922, Bayard, a Democrat, narrowly defeated du Pont, a Republican, twice in races for the U.S. Senate. In 1924, du Pont won the other Senate seat, and they served in the Senate together until his health forced du Pont to resign in 1928. Association Copy. Book.
