Der Band umfasst die zwischen 2016 - 2019 an verschiedenen Standorten durchgefuhrten Diskussionen des Forschungsclusters 1 "Von der Sesshaftigkeit zur komplexen Gesellschaft: Siedlung, Wirtschft, Umwelt, Kult". Mit insgesamt 25 Beitragen schliesst sich der Kreis der komparatistisch gefuhrten Diskussion aus einer globalen Perspektive, die die verschiedenen DAI-Projekte und Kooperationen bieten. Zugleich wird entlang der gesetzten Themen: Neolithisation and its consequences: a global view, from and to Iran (Workshop held in Tehran, 1-4 March 2016, Bastani Parizi Hall, Faculty of Literature and Humanities, University of Tehran), (2) Transitions? Continuity and Discontinuity of Cultural Developments from the Mesolithic/Epipalaeolithic to the Neolithic Period (Workshop held in Lisbon, 11-13 May 2017, National Museum of Archaeology and Geological Museum) und Origins of Complex Societies: A Worldwide Comparative Perspective (Workshop held in Lima, 3-6 October 2019, Ponti cia Universidad Catolica del Peru, Departamento de Humanidades, Auditorio) der Finger auf offene Fragen gelegt: Was sind die Herausforderungen der neuen Lebensweise, was der Grund fur eine Gesellschaft, solche uberhaupt auf sich zu nehmen, und wie konnen Lucken und Umbruche in unseren archaologischen Daten voneinander unterschieden werden? Der namengebende Titel des Forschungsclusters fuhrt zu den Grundlagen fur die Entstehung komplexer Gesellschaft, und der Ursachen fur die Entstehung von Komplexitat bzw. des nicht-Entstehen komplexer Gesellschaften, fur die ebenso wie okologische und soziookonomische Faktoren, regionale Besonderheiten zu berucksichtigen sind.
