She works exclusively in the still life genre. Each of her images is of an object assembled from fish, flesh, and fowl, in a post-Modernist nod to Man Ray and Meret Oppenheim. Her Surrealist-inspired art has also been compared to Arcimboldo and Edward Weston. "A contemporary artist of startling originality. Her exploration of the photographic still life, in which perishable materials - raw fish, fowl, vegetables - are combined with familiar, often feminine objects - a schoolgirl's uniform, high-heeled shoes, a pocketbook - triggers our senses of touch, taste, and smell through vision and imagination" (MIT Visual Arts Center). "Michiko Kon takes the Classical tradition of the still life and gives it new life through the re-animation of object parts and body parts in new forms. A fish with legs, a vacuum cleaner turned into an animal, a light bulb turned into a pear, a remote device turned into a living creature, a flower vase display sprouting heads of fish. An absolute "must-have" title for Michiko Kon collectors. This title is a contemporary art photography classic. This is one of few copies of the Exhibition Catalog still available online and despite its imperfection (very slight wear on the fragile spine corners, but it's there) is still in fine condition overall: Every single internal page is clean, crisp, and bright.
