Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Comics studies scholars engaging comparative mythology tend to limit critical approaches to superhero fiction and classical and religious texts. Even the popular argument that superheroes are a "modern mythology" typically does not venture outside these limitations. Tolkien's legendarium, Lovecraft's mythos, Tennyson's revisions to Arthurian myth, and Blake's mythology don't quite fit the creative models that prevailing criticism considers in comparative studies. Nick Katsiadas explores a greater literary history of myth in comics in his examinations of Neil Gaiman's Sandman, Alan Moore and J. H. Williams III's Promethea, and Mike Carey and Peter Gross's The Unwritten. The Romantics particularly used myth to highlight ideas about the value of imagination and creativity, and Katsiadas traces how these ways of thinking about literature and the arts persisted up through twentieth- and twenty-first-century comics. In this way, Romanticism in Comics helps us better understand comics' greater literary history and, also, helps us reread and better situate Romanticism's legacy in twentieth- and twenty-first-century art forms and ways of life. Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. The structural and symbolic purposes of ruins in literary texts have a long history, yet few scholars explore their importance within J. R. R. Tolkiens legendarium. From the ruins of Erebor and the relics of Gondolin appearing in The Hobbit to the various images of Amon Sul, Moria, and Osgiliath in The Lord of the Rings, Tolkien constructs a distinct moodone that captures characters awareness of the glories of the past and a desire to emulate them. The scholars who do engage Tolkiens relics and ruins tend to limit the scope to Tolkiens debt to the Middle Ages. While such scholarship begins important conversations, the full story of Tolkiens relics and ruins is left untold. Tolkiens Medievalism in Ruins takes corrective action and expands this historical and critical literary scope. This collection seeks to promote a more comprehensive approach to Tolkiens legendarium. This collection demonstrates how to achieve more comprehensive scholarship on J. R. R. Tolkien, connecting Tolkien studies with other literary periods and cultural contexts.
