In einer abflußlosen Senke der Zentraltürkei entstanden zwischen dem auch im Sommer von einer Schneekuppe bedeckten Erciyas-Vulkan im Norden und dem Aladag-Massiv des Taurus im Süden salzhaltige Seen, an die sich Süßwassersümpfe mit unübersehbaren Schilffeldern anschließen. Auf offenen Wasserflächen treiben dort schwimmende Schildinseln umher. Die Sultanssümpfe zählen zu den bedeutensten Feuchtgebieten der Paläarktis. Bis zu einer halben Million Wasservögel überwintern dort, zu den Brutvögeln zählen u.a. Flamingo, Zwergscharbe, Weißkopfruderente, Sichler, Löffler, Kranich, Spornkiebitz und Wüstenregenpfeifer. The genus Rhodanthidium is small group of pollinator bees which are found from the Moroccan Atlantic coast to the high mountainous areas of Central Asia. They include both small inconspicuous species, large species with an appearance much like a hornet, and vivid species with rich red colouration. Some of them use empty snail shells for nesting with a fascinating mating and nesting behaviour. This publication gives for the first time a complete overview of the genus, with an identification key, the first in the English language. All species are fully illustrated in both sexes with 178 photographs and 60 line drawings. Information is given on flowers visited, taxonomy, and seasonal occurrence; distribution maps are including for all species. Females are important pollinators which have a specialised pollen-carrying structure on the underside of the abdomen. Trachusa bees are solitary although usually construct their nests in aggregations. For those species whose breeding biology is known,nest cells are made from resin and pieces of green leaves. Trachusa has a world-wide distribution. This publication is the first comprehensive overview and guide to the 25 species found in Europe, Africa and Asia. It provides descriptions of all species and gives separate identification keys to females and males. All species are illustrated, with altogether 205 colour micro photographs and over 50 line drawings showing morphological details. Most wool carder and resin bees are relatively large and have a characteristic wasp-like colour pattern with yellow or off-white spots and stripes on a black background on the head, thorax, and abdomen. In the field, they are easily recognized by their rapid, characteristic hoverfly-like flight. The males are often armed with teeth, spines, and lobes with which they maintain their territory and aggressively defend it against intruders. Although most species are so conspicuous, there is no modern illustrated identification guide that covers all of Europe and includes the Mediterranean region with its rich bee fauna. This book is the first to provide a comprehensive overview of all 87 species of non-parasitic wool carder and resin bees of the tribe Anthidiini occurring in Europe and western Turkey. Morphology and colouration are described for all species, as well as floral relationships and distribution. Distribution maps are provided for all species. The descriptions are supported by 618 colour photographs of general appearance and body details important for identification. The identification key is illustrated with more than 150 line drawings, so that even less experienced bee identifiers are able to identify wool carder and resin bees down to species level.
