Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: As New. Kaplan, Patrice Ilustrador. 1st Edition. As new condition color illustrated boards. Includes Introduction and Preface. Illustrated with color decorated front and rear endpapers. "The publication of Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, and American Slave in 1845 was a milestone in American history. The book gave impetus to the American abolitionist movement on the eve of the Civil War, and its articulate author, a twenty-eight-year-old escaped slave, became a leading spokesman for the movement shortly after its publication. Douglass's Narrative established him as a symbol illustrating the cruel injustices of slavery and it helped to launch his career as a n eloquent advocate of freedom and equality for blacks in America. Perhaps more important, the book valitdated the path Douglass chose to earn his own freedom. Denied education and instruction in how to read and write, Douglass realized that ignorance was a tool that white masters used to enslave blacks. He determined to teach himself how to read and write and, as he writes, "From that moment, I understood the pathway from slavery to freedom" . Frederick Douglass died of heart failure in Massachusetts on February 20, 1895, at the age of seventy-eight. His life spanned virtually the entire nineteenth century, and it encapsulated what is arguably one of the most significant parts of the American experience during that century. Few authors wrote as passionately and prolifically as he did on a single theme but few were so deeply invested as he was in that cause behind that theme. Returning to his life experience again and again, in essays and books written over a half century, Douglass showed how critical appreciation of his race and his roots were to his identity. By using his life to illustrated the injustice of slavery and the unhumanity of racial oppression, he created a body of work that transcends its time and place. Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave as well as Douglass's other writings have been embraced by people of many races and cultures as enduring testaments to the indomitability of the human spirit, the perseverance of the individual in the pursuit of freedom, and the belief that in the struggle for equality justice ultimately prevails." - excerpt from the Introduction.

The Novartis Foundation produces Symposia, in which groups of leading scientists from a range of topics across biology, chemistry and medicine assembled to present papers and discuss results. The Novartis Foundation, originally known as the Ciba Foundation, is well known to scientists and clinicians around the world. From Wikipedia: "Osteoporosis ("porous bones) is a progressive bone disease that is characterized by a decrease in bone mass and density which can lead to an increased risk of fracture. In osteoporosis, the bone mineral density (BMD) is reduced, bone microarchitecture deteriorates, and the amount and variety of proteins in bone are altered. Osteoporosis is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a bone mineral density of 2.5 standard deviations or more below the mean peak bone mass (average of young, healthy adults) as measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry; the term "established osteoporosis" includes the presence of a fragility fracture. The disease may be classified as primary type 1, primary type 2, or secondary. The form of osteoporosis most common in women after menopause is referred to as primary type 1 or postmenopausal osteoporosis. Primary type 2 osteoporosis or senile osteoporosis occurs after age 75 and is seen in both females and males at a ratio of 2: 1. Secondary osteoporosis may arise at any age and affect men and women equally. This form results from chronic predisposing medical problems or disease, or prolonged use of medications such as glucocorticoids, when the disease is called steroid-or glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis. The risk of osteoporosis fractures can be reduced with lifestyle changes and in those with previous osteoporosis related fractures, medications. Lifestyle change includes diet, exercise, and preventing falls. The utility of calcium and vitamin D is questionable in most. Bisphosphonates are useful in those with previous fractures from osteoporosis but are of minimal benefit in those who have osteoporosis but no previous fractures. Osteoporosis is a component of the frailty syndrome." From a medical school on-line posting: "Frederick S. Kaplan, M.D. is The Isaac & Rose Nassau Professor of Orthopaedic Molecular Medicine and Chief of the Division of Molecular Orthopaedic Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He is an alumnus of The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (1976), and was Chief Resident in Orthopaedic Surgery at The Hospital of The University of Pennsylvania and The Children s Hospital of Philadelphia from 1980 to 1981. Kaplan was a Hartford Foundation Research Fellow in human genetics and molecular biology from 1989 to 1991 in the laboratory of his mentor and friend Dr. Michael Zasloff. This experience led to his exploration of the mechanisms for heterotopic bone formation and skeletal metamorphosis in several disabling childhood diseases. In 1989, Kaplan, an orthopaedic surgeon, met a child with fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP), a rare and disabling disorder in which the body forms a second skeleton of heterotopic bone. Motivated to know and do more, Kaplan began a pioneering second career on the molecular genetics of heterotopic ossification, work that led to the discovery of the FOP gene, to the description of the molecular pathophysiology of skeletal metamorphosis in humans, to the discovery of progressive osseous heteroplasia (another disorder of heterotopic ossification) and its causative gene and pathophysiology.
