Der jüdische Verfasser war 1941 nach Theresienstadt, 1943 nach Auschwitz und von 1944-45 in das Lager Schwarzheide deportiert worden. Ursprünglich waren die Zeichnungen nur mit englischen Bildlegenden und -kommentaren versehen, die deutschen Bildlegenden sind vom Autor erst später nachträglich in Handschrift eingefügt worden. This book is a compilation of drawings and watercolors drawn by Holocaust Survivor Alfred Kantor, during his time in a displaced-persons camp at Deggendorf, Bavaria in July of 1945. It records his experience as a concentration camp prisoner of the Nazis at three camps--Terezin, Auschwitz, and Schwarzheide. This medium-sized hard cover book (7 ½ x 9 ½ inches, about 25 pages of opening text, followed by 127 plates each with a short caption and perhaps a copy or sketch of the plate opposite, and then some 9 pages of notes about the plates) was published by McGraw-Hill Company of New York, dated 1971 and the First Edition (so stated). The book is bound in hard covers that resemble, one assumes, the diary kept by Kantor; it is protected by a similarly presented glossy dust jacket. Condition: This book is in very good condition. There are some signs of wear to the dust jacket including the traces where a rubber band stuck to the paper covers and lifted the finish when it was removed. The hard covers show some edge wear and a few minor scraps to the glossy finish; they are also slightly bumped at corners and spine tips. Inside, the book is unmarked and the pages and plates are clean and bright throughout. Both hinges are intact, and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.
