A comprehensive guide to manuscript holdings in Polish libraries and museums, prepared by the Manuscripts Department of the National Library as part of its work toward a central register of Polish manuscripts. The guide covers 317 institutions -- 237 state, 70 ecclesiastical, and 10 private -- including central, university, academy, learned-society, provincial and municipal libraries; national and regional museums; cathedral, chapter, and collegiate libraries; theological seminaries and monastic libraries; and private collections. The material was assembled through direct inspection, correspondence, and a nationwide questionnaire campaign conducted between 1976 and 1980. Each entry follows a standardized scheme, giving the location and name and address of the institution, approximate number of manuscripts, access conditions, cataloguing history, and a detailed characterization of the collection arranged by provenance, including major historical collections, family and institutional archives, and literary estates, with bibliography. The introduction surveys the historical dispersal of Poland's manuscript holdings, from the removal of the Załuski Library to St Petersburg in the late eighteenth century through the dissolution of monastic libraries, wartime losses, and postwar redistribution, and reviews earlier attempts at centralized registration, including Chwalewik's Zbiory polskie and projects of the Institute of Literary Research and relating to Oriental manuscripts. An important national reference work and the first guide to attempt comprehensive coverage of manuscript collections in Polish libraries and museums, excluding archival holdings.…

Hardcover. Condición: New. 2 parts in 3 volumes 8vo (24.5 cm), XLIII, 561 pp.; 263 pp.; LI, 556 pp. Publishers' cloth. Tom 1 (main text) and companion Indeks volume, bound in green cloth lettered in gilt, together with Rękopisy w zbiorach kościelnych [Manuscripts in Ecclesiastical Collections], Vol. 2, by Tomasz Makowski, in red cloth -- the latter apparently issued as a separate installment covering ecclesiastical collections. English translation of the introduction by Philip Earl Steele. A greatly expanded second edition of Kamolowa's standard 1988 guide, bringing the directory of Polish manuscript collections up to date after more than two decades of institutional and territorial change. Volume 1 covers 359 public institutions, compared with 237 in the first edition, arranged alphabetically by town and then by institution, including libraries, museums, and academic collections throughout Poland, while excluding private collections and archives and, in this volume, ecclesiastical holdings, which are treated separately in Makowski's companion volume. Entries follow the detailed schema established in the first edition, giving location and contact details, approximate manuscript holdings, access conditions, cataloguing history, description of collections by provenance, and bibliography. The bilingual introduction surveys the historical dispersal of Polish manuscripts from the partitions through the Second World War and postwar border changes, reviews earlier cataloguing initiatives, and explains the arrangement and methodology of the guide. A separate and substantially enlarged index volume, containing some 12,000 entries, provides extensive access to the material. Rękopisy w zbiorach kościelnych, by Tomasz Makowski, covers diocesan archives, cathedral and seminary libraries, and the archives and libraries of religious orders and congregations throughout Poland, vastly expanding upon the 70 ecclesiastical institutions recorded by Krystyna Muszyńska in the 1988 first edition. An indispensable reference for locating and researching manuscript collections in Poland, and the most comprehensive successor to the pioneering 1988 national survey. …
