Condición: new. Pages: 334 Language: English. Tieto-Finlandia-ehdokas 2016. Englanninkielinen versio. Rut Bryk publication was published in conjunction with Rut Bryk's centenary exhibition produced by EMMA. Rut Bryk (1916-1999) ranks among the most admired masters of the golden age of Finnish applied arts. Graduating as a graphic artist, she rapidly gained recognition after joining the artists' collective at the Arabia porcelain factory in 1942. There the weaver of delicate storybook narratives evolved into an idiosyncratic force within the abstract idiom. In a career spanning six decades, Bryk created a body of work that reads like the story of modernism, mirroring the optimism of the post-war reconstruction period and Finland's transformation into a western industrial nation. Harri Kalha, who befriended the artist as a young art student, tells Bryk's story, combining art historical narrative with vivid, intimate details. He introduces us to a timid, publicity-shy experimenter who became a cosmopolitan modernist through her unshakeable faith in the power of art. Harri Kalha, PhD, is an Adjunct Professor of Art History and Gender Studies and the author of award-winning publications on visual culture. 9789525509496.…

Rut Bryk, authored by Rut Bryk and art historian Harri Kalha and published by EMMA, is a captivating journey through the life and artistry of a visionary ceramicist whose work continues to inspire across generations. This beautifully crafted book opens a window onto Bryk's extraordinary creative evolution-from her early, delicately detailed figurative pieces to the monumental, architectural ceramic compositions that defined her later career. Harri Kalha's insight and scholarship shine as he unravels Bryk's artistic language, highlighting her bold experimentation, her sensitivity to color and form, and her unique position in Nordic design history. Whether you're an admirer of modern art, a design enthusiast, or simply someone who loves discovering trailblazing creators, this book offers an immersive, richly illustrated exploration of Bryk's world. Hardcover. Condición: As New. 1st Edition. Touko Laaksonen (1920-1991), aka Tom of Finland, is Finland's most internationally acclaimed artist. He created a gallery of male types that retain fresh relevance from generation to generation as part of a timeless cultural iconography. Not only are his homoerotic fantasy drawings celebrated as enduring icons of gay subcultures and communities, but today they are also recognized by a growing audience of art lovers. His highly aestheticized, technically immaculate drawings have exerted a worldwide influence in fashion, design and culture trends. "One man's porn has become everyone's art," comments Kiasma Museum Director Leevi Haapala in his essay, which follows the career of the Kaarina-born, Helsinki-based advertising executive and musician who went on to achieve worldwide artistic fame. Haapala's essay is accompanied by a biography compiled by researcher Kati Mustola and an essay by curator João Laia, who uses the trope of cruising to discuss the sense of community, joy and pride engendered by Tom's characters. Researcher Harri Kalha sheds light on how Tom's originally hyper-Finnish masculine types embarked on their world conquest, leading them all the way to Los Angeles, where Tom's namesake foundation is based today. Curator Alvin Li's essay in turn examines the radicalism, hypermasculinity and fetishism of Tom's drawings. The richly illustrated book presents Tom of Finland's art from the 1950s until the end of his career, and it coincides with an extensive exhibition hosted by the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma. Among the featured articles is a comprehensive biographical interview published in Prätkäposti (Biker Mail) magazine in 1990 to mark the occasion of the artist's 70th birthday. In this interview, the artist speaks in his own voice, sharing insights into the thematic background of his homoerotic imagery. The interview also holds documentary value in charting the internationalization of gay culture and the evolving status of gender minorities in Finland's then-reigning cultural hegemony. Text in Finnish and English. 160 pp.…
