softcover. Condición: very good. Manchester-born novelist Jack Kahane began the Obelisk Press after his publisher, Grant Richards, went bankrupt. Going into partnership with a printer, Kahane, as Cecil Barr, published his next novel Daffodil under his Vendome imprint. Pearson identified July 1931 [3rd impression] as the earliest issue printed: "He almost certainly exaggerated the number of times the book went to press in order to give the appearance of healthy sales, and stimulate demand. Lending weight to this theory is the sign-off which appears at the end of the text on [301]: Paris, May 1931. It seems unlikely that the book would have been set, proof-read and published in less than a month, and unlikelier still that it would have been reprinted twice by July. " This is the Obelisk July 1936 "11th" impression. Daffodil, light bit of erotica about a model who did more, perhaps, off-camera. Was a shocker for the tourists in the early '30s. Creasing, soiling to the covers. Pages are a bit age-toned. book.…

Soft cover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. BARR, Cecil [KAHANE, Jack] - Bright Pink Youth Paris: The Obelisk Press (1934) 8vo; Heavy paper wrappers with fold-over flaps; The striking illustration on the upper cover by G. Goursat, of a topless woman smoking a cigarette in a long holder; the spine and lower cover shows the press logo; The front flap displays a reprice sticker of 60 francs, with the lower flap providing information of the press's releases including Miller's Tropic of Cancer; pp [x], 11-332, [iv]; The upper cover with one small stain below the letter U in Youth, a gentle lean and creasing to the spine, minor rubbing to corners and edges; overall a very good or better copy that is without loss and retains much of its colour. First edition published in August 1934. One of publisher Jack Kahane's six books written under the pseudonym of 'Cecil Barr', used according to Kahane / The Obelisk Press Bibliographer Neil Pearson in homage to his favourite bar in the Cecil Hotel in Paris. Kahane would become depressed by the success of his 'Barr' books, given the heavyweight literary company he kept, that these books were often a source of deep embarrassment for him. Salacious, gratuitous and successful they were though with copies of the adventures of 'Tommy Trans-Wood and his Wife' selling so well, it needed a second printing and then a second edition in 1955. It is rare to find a first edition in such good condition. [Pearson A-31].…

Softcover. Condición: Very good. First edition. First edition August 1934. 'Cecil Barr' was the sometime pseudonym of Jack Kahane, proprietor of the Obelisk Press, whose favorite watering hole in Paris was the bar of the Cecil Hotel. This tale recounts the marital, and extra marital, adventures of Tommy Trans-Wood and his 'charming' wife. This is a very good copy in wrappers illustrated by by G. Goursat. A little spotting on the wraps, but still a remarkably fresh, fine copy. The rear flap of the wrapper advertises the publisher's list including the upcoming *Tropic of Cancer*. A beautiful copy. 5½" - 7¼". G. Goursat (ilustrador). book.…

8vo, pp. 282. Original illustrated stiff paper wrappers. Small snag and faint crease to leading edge of front wrapper, 1cm closed tear to foot of spine. A very good copy. Second edition. First published by the Obelisk Press in 1934. 'Cecil Barr' was the sometime pseudonym of Jack Kahane, proprietor of the Obelisk Press, whose favourite watering hole in Paris was the bar of the Cecil Hotel. Kahane died in 1939 and Obelisk as a going concern died with him, but his son Maurice Girodias of the Olympia Press would revive the imprint's name from time to time, conferring as it did a commercially useful promise of smut on books bearing its name. Upon consulting his own bibliography of the Obelisk Press (Obelisk: A History of Jack Kahane and the Obelisk Press, LUP 2007), your cataloguer found the following entry for this book: 'Second edition. 1955. Not seen.' Given the compiling of the bibliography took four and a half years, I have no hesitation in pronouncing this book rare. Pearson A31c.…

First Edition. 8vo, 285pp; original orange cloth. Kahane, writer, publisher, and founder of the Obelisk Press, wrote several novels under the pseudonym Cecil Barr, this being among the earliest. A very scarce book, especially in the dust jacket, which features marvelously risque artwork by Constantin Aladjalov. Very slight lean, discreet pencil ownership inscription on the front pastedown, placed to be hidden beneath the jacket flap; near fine in an excellent example of the scarce dust jacket, just a bit faded on the spine, with a touch of rubbing to the extremities and a small triangular chip to the upper rear corner.…
