Añadir al carritoIbbetson was a Yorkshire born artist whose first opportunity came when he was invited to accompany Cathcart on his embassy to China. Cathcart died en route, however, and this seems to sum up Ibbetson's luck; soon after his elegant views of Bath had been aquatinted and published by Hassell, his wife died. He had already suffered the loss of eight children and this latest tragedy brought on an attack of brain fever. After he recovered from this he found that he had been robbed by his servants; this led him to seek escape in a life of dissipation which led to penury. At the end his artistic skill enabled him to pay off his debts. The small scale of his drawings suited book illustration and his special skill as an animal, and in particular, cattle painter can be seen in the illustrations in this work. First edition; 4to (24.5 x 19.5 cm); 16 hand-coloured aquatint plates including frontispiece, with the half-title, a touch of spotting to least few leaves otherwise clean internally; later full calf, gilt rolled boards, gilt spine in six compartments with contrasting gilt lettering piece, board edges and turn-ins gilt rolled, all edges gilt, extremities a little rubbed, otherwise a very good copy; [4], 266, [2]pp. Abbey (Scenery), 38; ESTC T54291; Tooley 277.…

A Picturesque Guide to Bath, Bristol Hot-Wells, the River Avon, and the adjacent Country: illustrated with a set of Views, taken in the Summer of 1792; by Mess. Ibbetson, Laporte, and J. Hassell; and engraved in aquatinta.
[LARGE-PAPER COPY] Ibbetson, Julius, John Laporte, & John Hassell.

This finely produced guide to fashionable Bath 'contains sixteen hand-coloured aquatints of much merit' (Martin- Hardie). All sixteen of the plates were aquatinted by Hassell, fourteen being taken from his own drawings with one after Laporte with one after Ibbetson. Añadir al carritoFIRST EDITION. 4to. (25 x 19 cm). Contemporary half red roan over marbled boards, spine with raised bands and gilt decoration, brown endpapers, sprinkled edges. Aquatinted frontispiece and 15 aquatinted plates (some with tissue guards), all with original hand-colouring.* Ex libris William Adlam, of the Manor house in Chew Magna, Somerset, with his book-plate to front pastedown. With a manuscript note on p.158 disputing a point in the text regarding the mayor of Bristol's salary, rare occasional spotting and light toning, generally an excellent copy. *The list of plates at the rear calls for "View from the Ferry-house, on the river Avon, looking towards Dundry Tower" to be bound in facing p. 172. In this copy this plate is missing; however, a different plate entitled "View of the Passage House at the Rownham Ferry on the River Avon looking towards Bristol", which is not called for in the list of plates, is bound in facing p.227. Abbey and Tooley both list this "Passage House" plate instead of the "Ferry-house" plate called for in the directions to the binder. (Abbey Scenery 38; Tooley 277). …
