Ancienne forteresse du IVe siècle et siège d'un évêché, Aleth fut la cité dominante avant que son transfert à Saint-Malo au XIIe siècle ne l'éclipse. Saint-Servan, d'abord simple faubourg, s'est développé comme une paroisse distincte administrée par une assemblée de notables, le « Général ». Malgré un territoire morcelé par 38 seigneuries, ce bourg a conservé une identité forte jusqu'à son érection en commune à la Révolution. Les deux entités furent liées dès 1321, marquant la transition de la cité antique vers la ville moderne. L'exemplaire est dédicacé par l'auteur Jules Haize (1873-1933), maire de Saint-Servan et l'un des fondateurs de la Société d'histoire et d'Archéologie de l'Arrondissement de Saint-Malo.
