Full color lithographic bullfighting poster on thin stock paper; full dimensions approximately H 41.5 inches x L 21 inches. Poster is probably not an original but may very well be an early reproduction for the paper is rather brittle and browned. Poster's bullfighting image graphics are at top 29 inches with single masthead line of black lettering at very top; extended text at poster's bottom 12 inches. Wonderfully stylized graphic imagery from center front foreground shows costumed matador with bright red cape and sword both held downward as head is turned away towards center image of charging bull with three banderilles arising from the animal's neck; far background shows blurry stadium crowd. Small paper loss and thumbtack holes at corners; some chipping at edges of top right corner but not penetrating deeper than the poster's thick ruled margin; long 11 inch tear descending from center top edge; several other short and mostly closed tears at edges as well as creases. Suitable for framing after some restoration to tears (i.e. not currently framed or matted). Will ship rolled in a sturdy tube.…

It advertises "Corridas Generals" or bullfights in the city of Bilbao during the month of August. The matadors featured are Cayetano Ordoñez, Juan Silveti, Julio Aparicio, Antonio Ordoñez, Manolo Vazquez, Jumillano, Pedres, Antoñete, Chicuelo II, and the rejoneador Angel Peralta. Next to the matadors, the print advertises "Ganaderia," or livestock. This piece was printed at Imprenta y Litografía Ortega in Valencia, Spain. Ortega Printing excelled in lithography, banknote production, and especially in bullfighting and festival posters, where it was the leading company in Spain. Its golden age was from the 1920s to the 1940s, thanks to collaborations with renowned masters of bullfighting-themed painting such as Carlos Ruano Llopis, Juan Reus, and José Cros Estrems. (La imprenta) Spanish-style bullfighting is called corrida de toros (coursing of bulls) or la fiesta ("the festival"). In the traditional corrida, three matadors each fight two bulls. The modern corrida is highly ritualized, with three distinct stages or tercios "thirds"); the start of each being announced by a bugle sound. In the final stage, the tercio de muerte ("the third of death"), the Matadore emerges with a red handkerchief, the iconic symbol of the sport. American author Ernest Hemingway wrote of it in his 1932 non-fiction book Death in the afternoon: "Bullfighting is the only art in which the artist is in danger of death and in which the degree of brilliance in the performance is left to the fighter's honor." Edición original de esta memoria militar escrita (dirigida) por Juan Prim, durante su estancia junto a un numeroso grupo de militares españoles comisionados al respecto, y algunos más que a titulo personal se añadieron a la comitiva. Fueron dos los viajes que se hicieron a Turquia, en el segundo participaron 13 oficiales, 37 criados, 46 cavallos y un furgón, además de una escolta de lanceros turcos, y un pequeño número (12) de voluntarios catalanes (al servicio de Prim). XII páginas, 2 hojas, 326 páginas, diversos estados plegados que forman parte de la paginación, al final un mapa plegado, grabado al acero por Camilo Alabern. No binding. Condición: Very Good. AN EXTREMELY LARGE BULLFIGHTING POSTER. 2380 x 1050 mm., printed in colour, with some breaks at the double folds as might be expected otherwise in good condition. A very large bull fighting promotional poster measuring just under eight feet tall. It is a by the noted artist Juan Reus Parra (1912-2003) and published for the for the Autumn Fair in Cordoba in 1955. The city has produced some of the finest bull fighters in history. Parra was born in Valencia where as an artist he became particularly well known for bullfighting posters. At seven years old whilst working as an apprentice he met the painter Constantino Gomez. In the 1940s he went to work for the Ortega workshop in Valencia where he specialised as a designer of bullfighting posters. He became arguably the best known artist on the subject. This is amongst the largest sized poster he produced, most are half the size.…
