This work examines the history of an Afrikaner institution devoted to the Day of Covenant, which commemorates the occasion, on 16 December 1838, when Sarel Cilliers, spiritual leaders of the Trekkers, undertook that his people would regard the date as a sabbath thenceforward if victory was granted against the Zulus. The Battle of Blood River was duly won by the Voortrekkers, and the day has had a special place in the Afrikaner collective memory ever since.
