Condición: Very good. - Small quarto [9-3/4 inches high by 7 inches wide], softcover bound in printed cream wrappers. The binding is bumped with the spine & extremities darkened & with the surface rubbed away from the bottom corner of the front wrap. The tail of the spine is chipped. There is a small stain to the front wrap & some tiny marks to the rear wrap. Title, 168 & [1] pages. Black-and-white portrait frontispiece & full-page black-and-white illustrations. Very good. The text is in Swedish with an English summary. The English subtitle printed on the title page is "A study in the religious art and ideas of Ernst Josephson".An important Swedish artist and pioneer of modern art, Josephson's latent, inherited schizophrenia overtook him at the age of 37.

Single issue of this long running magazine devoted to current trends in literature and art. This with "Master Misery" by Truman Capote, "Epilogue on my Host the World," by George Santayana, etc. GOOD condition. Moderate uneven fading to the wrappers, with minor soiling. Some curling at the corners. Text block toned.

First edition, first printing Gift inscription from one of the authors of the text on the opening flyleaf. Fine bright glossy illustrated stiff wraps with excellent spine and crisp bright text. A deep and wonderful display throughout of the artist's sketches, drawings and paintings. With a variety of text by the different authors.

The original wrappers are bound in. There are a few tiny white stains to the bottom edge of the front board. 249 pages. Illustrated in black & white. Very good. Ernst Josephson [1851-1906] was a Swedish painter and poet from a prominent Jewish family. His paintings were mainly portraits and depictions of folk life. Josephson had a troubled life. He contracted syphilis at a fairly young age, and in 1888 became mentally ill. He was later diagnosed as a schizophrenic, but continued working throughout his illness, often while in a trance-like state. He died at the age of 55.The text is in Swedish.

Josephsons illustrationer till 26 av de 35 dikterna i Fänrik Ståls sägner av Johan Ludvig Runeberg, jämte relevanta utdrag ur diktsviten. - - - (Ur förordet:) "I den stora samling teckningar från Josephsons sjukdomstid, som på sin tid ägdes av konsthandlare Gösta Stenman i Stockholm, ingick ett antal framställningar med anknytning till Fänrik Ståls sägner. Stenman visade dem bl a på en utställning 1940 i sitt galleri vid Storgatan, i vissa fall med hänvisning till en bestämd sägen, i andra under den summariska titeln 'Ur Fänrik Stål'. Innan Stenmans Josephson-samling något år senare skingrades hade Ingrid Mesterton tillfälle att fotografiskt dokumentera den. Utgivaren av denna bok har nu beretts möjlighet att gå igenom denna omfattande fotosamling och har därvid kunnat identifiera merparten av de Fänrik Stål-illustrationer som återges här. Genom ytterligare forskningar har detta bildmaterial kunnat kompletteras med ännu ett viktigt blad. Dock har det, trots intensiv efterforskning, ej gått att få fram en komplett serie. Fänrik Ståls sägner omfattar 35 dikter och det har varit möjligt att identifiera bilder till 26 av dessa. Det är möjligt att Josephson illustrerat samtliga - så gjorde han gärna i sina litterära bildserier - men några blad kan ha skänkts bort eller sålts på ett tidigt stadium. Den spridning som Josephsons teckningar fått sedan de stora samlingarna skingrats gör det föga troligt att vi någonsin skall få tillgång till en komplett bildsvit. Endast några få av de bilder som återges här har tidigare varit publicerade och då med beskrivande titlar som inte knutit dem till Fänrik Stål".
