Añadir al carritoFirst Edition. 12mo, bound in sixes. 19cm. Later brown leather spine with green-grey leather title label to spine titled in gilt, over contemporary brown paper covered boards. 92pp. (the pagination runs [i-viii]; 9-92pp contiguously). Scuffing and rubbing to board edges, some scratching, staing, and spotting in places, internally clean with some light scattered foxing throughout. A very good copy with a later re-spine. Inscribed to the front flyleaf: "Geo. W. Dean, 13 August 1866, A present from Mrs. J.C. Passmore" Mrs. Passmore was Susan Orrick Passmore, the wife of the otherwise anonymous author of this collection of poems (described by the author as his "weaved up follies"); Joseph Clarkson Passmore, a Reverend from Lancaster County PA, and a correspondent of Edgar Allan Poe among others, who at the time of publication was about to accept the chair of English Literature, Philosophy and Political Economy at the College of St. James, Maryland. The Poe connection is a fairly tenuous one; Passmore was the recipient of a very amiable rejection letter in 1840 after contacting Poe at the Gentleman's Magazine with a plan for a series of Lectures to be printed in the magazine. Poe seconded an interest in the content, but was at the time unable to offer financial compensation for articles, and could hardly expect Mr. Passmore to contribute them for free. For some time the collection was attributed to J.C. Parker, although this copy's association rather definitively puts paid to that theory.
