On the back side of the dust jacket is a large taped tearto the front of the dust jacket where the text is on the word Dance. Inscribed on the first front end paper by Jospeh Marks to his friends. Included with this book is two black and white photos of the author. The larger photo measures 5" x 3 1/2". , the smaller photo measures 2 1/2" x 2 1/2". Nice to have these real photos with the book. Also with the book is a postcard bent in half and signed on the inside of the post card by the author. Dated June 14, 1957. The historical study of Dance Education in America before 1900. Thirty-Three year old Joseph E. Marks III danced in the premiere performances of Ted Shawn's Minuet for Drums and Myura Kinch's Along Apointd Sands, but he is primarily a director of dance and drama and a teacher of dance and physical education. Borned and reared in Lexington, Kentucky, he was graduated from the Columbia Military Academy before beginning a three and a half year term in 1943 as a neuropsychiatric techincian in the U.S. Navy . He then studied at the American School of Ballet in New York with Shawn, Miss Kinch, Ruth St. Denis, Jose Limon, Margaret Craske and Danivola. He recieved his A.B. degree in dance and physical education from the University of Kentucky in 1950, and his M.S. degree from Springfield College the following year. He ran his own dance studio dance studio in Lexington in 1951-1952; was director of dance and drama for the Board of Park Commissioners, Gratz Park, Lexington, from 1951 to 1956; was director of physical edcucation and recreation at the Junior School of Fork Union Military Academy in Fork Union, Virginjia, from September 1956, through May 1957; and has been house manager and maintenance super intendant of the Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival in Lee, Massachusetts, every summer since 1948.
