Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book provides a record of Decatur and Macon County in the early to mid-1800s, as related through the first-hand recollections of Jane Martin Johns. Johns was not a resident of Decatur until 1849, but her pioneering spirit and interest in uncovering the town's history led her to interview and correspond with many early residents, and she supplemented these interviews with thorough research of local records. The book offers a glimpse into the motivations and challenges faced by the area's early settlers, and shares the profound effect Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War had on this Illinois community. Johns reveals the hardships faced by women, particularly during wartime, while also acknowledging the men and women who worked together to alleviate suffering, including the organizing efforts for a local hospital aid society. This book is a compelling combination of memoir, history, and social commentary, offering readers a unique perspective on the development of community in the Midwest. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…
