The author's unique background (both he and his wife are fine musicians) should prepare us for the music which is in this collection of poems. There are pleasing surprises at the end of many of the poems, building up to a nice climax with the final explanation or challenge and the concluding choice of words. Some of the poems are particularly touching reminiscences of childhood.Readers of the present volume will be greeted by an even more polished and varied group of poems which goes with the further developememt of this poet."--John Ransonm Lewis ; Contents: A bestiary -- A cloudy day -- Alenda lux ubi orta libertas -- A new birth -- A perturbation -- Arachne -- Art catalogue -- Autobiography -- Cat nap -- Chauvinism-- Did you ever -- Dust-devils -- Echoes -- Fish bait -- Flight 007 -- Hospital -- How groes my love -- It takes us all -- Japanese cherry -- Leaves -- Love's hold -- Mirages for sail -- My old home -- Nostalgia -- One day -- Ontogeny recapitulated -- Peggy Mitchell and Boys' High Class of 1924 -- Phoenix -- Please pass the baby -- Polyphemus -- Remembered -- Resurgens -- Ships and seas -- Superstitions -- The ceramic cherry-picker lamp -- The digs -- The flight of the arrow -- The landing -- The least I could do -- The making of a champion -- The quest of a writer -- The relentless tide -- The search -- The seasons -- The Weavers of Weaverville -- Times and tides -- To a very special friend -- To the sixth graders of Montgomery Elementary -- Travels -- Treblinka revisited -- Tricolor -- What did she say -- What is a poet -- Where does love end -- Whisperings of the rain forest ; SIGNED presentation by author on endpaper ; paper defect in front endpaper ; FINE/FINE. Red, stamped cloth with gold lettering ; xii, 343 p. ; 19 cm. ; faded, foxed ; front hinge starting ; copy of John Ransom Lewis, Poet Laureate of Georgia, with his signature on front ep ; interesting life of Bishop Fitzgerald, with details of preaching to antebellum southern black congregations, with names of some prominent congregation members in Macon, Georgia ; tales of fallen women in California, and an interesting encounter with Edgar Allan Poe in Richmond three days before his death ; "Dreamy, delightful, seductive old Savannah! I have not seen it for more than forty years, but the memory of it is fresh and sweet and sacred. If I were a poet, I would put its Bonaventure Cemetery into verse. It is itself a poem. There is nothing just like it elsewhere: the live-oak avenues, draped with the long sea moss, gently stirred by the soft breeze; a sky that bends in deepest blue above, with no sound to break the stillness save the faint note of a song bird in the minor key, or the whisper of a breeze like "the sighing of broken reeds" that symbolizes that of breaking hearts. Sidney Lanier might have sung the song of Bonaventure had he seen it as I have seen it. The elegance of the city and the heartiness of the country met you in the old Savannah in a way that gave you wonder and delight. " ; FAIR. Book.…

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. 1st edition ; xiii, 446 pp., 1 leaf ; illustrated ; LCCN: 42-18716 ; OCLC: 1166562 ; LC: RD118; NLM: WP 910 ; "Max Thorek (1880-1960) was born in Hungary. The murder of his brother during a pogrom that occurred in the spring of 1897 persuaded his family to leave Hungary. They immigrated to the United States in 1898, and settled in Chicago. Thorek earned money as a violinist while he attended the University of Chicago. Although he had no prior knowledge of the snare drum, he talked an administrator at the University of Chicago into granting him a full scholarship as a drummer for the University band. Thorek was thus able to enter Rush Medical College in the fall of 1900, which was then affiliated with the University of Chicago. He received his medical degree in 1904 from Rush College. Thorek worked in obstetrics, general, and reconstructive surgery. His innovative techniques and practices are still widely used in surgery today. He founded the International College of Surgeons in Geneva in 1935 and the International Museum of Surgical Science in a Chicago Gold Coast mansion in 1954. Thorek was also an internationally acclaimed amateur photographer during the pictorialist movement, and author of several books on the subject, including "Camera Art as a Means of Self-Expression (1947) and "Creative Camera Art" (1937). Thorek benefited the lives of his many patients, students, and colleagues. He not only taught doctors to be better surgeons, but his inquiries and experiments led to profound developments in many different areas of surgery, especially in internal medicine. Thorek was primarily known for his innovative operation for removing the gallbladder. His refinements to operations on the breast and abdomen improved plastic surgery, and his book Plastic Surgery of the Breast and Abdominal Walls helped make plastic surgery a respectable part of medicine." ; name on front ep and bookplate of John Ransom Lewis, MD, the one-time Poet Laureate of Georgia ; Contents : Anatomy, histology -- Embryology -- Histophysiology -- Historical, developmental and comparative considerations -- Physiology of the breast -- Folklore surrounding the female breast -- Racial characteristics -- Congenital anomalies of the breast -- Hypertrophies of the female breasts -- Etiology, symptoms, course and complications of breast hypertrophies -- Gynecomastia -- Indications and contraindications for reconstructive surgery of the female breast -- The technic of plastic operations for hypertrophy and penulosity of the female breast -- Scars and keloids -- Amastia, hypomastia and inequality of the breasts -- Diseases of the nipples -- Reconstructive surgery of the abdominal wall. ; textured red cloth with gold lettering ; no dustjacket ; foxing, edge wear ; numerous photographs of nudes from around the world, illustrations of surgical procedures, instruments, etc ;"This book provides the early history of breast reconstruction and the surgical methods of breast reconstruction " ; VG.
