Growing up in Avon, Indiana, Hornaday went to both Oskaloosa College and the Iowa State Agricultural College (now Iowa State University). He then travelled across the world before being appointed chief taxidermist of the United States National Museum. From here he started his efforts to protect the dwindling buffalo population from overhunting. To pursue this further, Hornaday left the National Museum to become the first director of the New York Zoological Park, known today as the Bronx Zoo.
