The Record, as it is sometimes colloquially referred to, is widely-recognized as an important historical record of the unfolding debates in architectural practice, history and criticism in the 20th-century United States. Throughout its 133+ years in print, Architectural Record has engaged readership among architecture, engineering, and design professionals through articles showcasing noteworthy architectural projects around the world. News, commentary, criticism, and education sections outline the scope of content. Of note are the glossy, high-quality photos of featured projects, which give the magazine wider readership outside of just those working in the design professions. Architectural Record began publication in 1891 by Clinton W. Sweet. In March 1938, the periodical American Architect and Architecture, first published in 1876, was merged with Architectural Record. S. R. Crown Hall is a building at 3360 South State Street, on the campus of the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) in Chicago, Illinois, United States. The structure was designed by the architect Ludwig Mies van Der Rohe for the IIT's College of Architecture, which he led for two decades. Crown Hall is a Chicago Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a National Historic Landmark. Mies was first commissioned to design a lecture hall for IIT's architecture school in 1950. The building was named in honor of the businessman S. R. Crown, whose brothers Henry and Irving donated $250,000 for construction. Work began on December 2, 1954, and the building was dedicated on April 30, 1956.
