Very slightest indications of wear to edges, otherwise bright and clean inside and out. John Cumming was the longtime director of the Clarke Historical Library at Central Michigan University. This volume is one of a series of books by Cumming that were collections of historical writings on specific topics that he personally set into type and hand printed. Cumming would create 487 copies of each book. He personally bound early books in this series, but later enlisted the help of a local bindery. A wonderful copy from the hands of a truly dedicated historian and book person! All of our books are individually inspected and described. Never ex-lib unless explicitly described as such.

This book contains a concise discussion of the enigmatic "Party of Nine or Eleven" and records of said party, which is followed by a reprinted letter by William B. Lorton. The Party of Nine or Eleven braved the Mojave Desert and Death Valley in 1849. Most did not make it. A letter from William B. Lorton is reprinted here after the discussion, the former of which briefly details the inhospitable environment and the plight of those who dared travel through the infamous desert. Excerpt from the first page of text: "The following short account of a journey over the Salt Lake Trail in 1849, was written at Los Angeles, January 30, 1850. It first appeared in the New York Sun, and was reprinted in the Cleveland Plain Dealer, May 11, 1850, page 3, col. 3, 4. . Forgotten and practically unknown for over one-hundred years, Lorton's account so far, is the only one to record the exact number, with their names of what has come to be known as the 'Pinney-Savage Party,' or more commonly referred to as the 'Party of nine or eleven.'".

Folio and pages are very neat and clean. John Bartlett Goodman III (1901-1991) was an American art director and wrote a comprehensive encyclopedia (which was never published) on the 762 ships that traveled from the East Coast to California during the Gold Rush, titled, "California Gold Rush Fleet Encyclopedia of Vessels Sailing from the East Coast of the United States and Canada for San Francisco, December 7, 1848-December3, 1849." The encyclopedia described the histories of the vessels which were organized A-Z; The Key corresponds to the encyclopedia and is also in alphabetical order. The Key lists the ships' specifications charts and tables, such as where and when they were built, their masters, and what happened to them.

Light offsetting to the endpapers, but still a fine copy, in the original plain protective dust jacket, which was green and is now mostly faded to brown. Reprints a scarce overland narrative written in 1878 and published in 1896.
