Fine. - Over 280 words penned on 4 sides of 8-1/2 inch high by 5-5/8 inch wide "Hotel d'Angleterre, Biarritz" pictorial stationery with an elaborate engraving of the Hotel adorning the head of the first page. The author and editor of books on The Lotos Club and race horses, John…Elderkin writes to the American lecture manager Major James B. Pond about encountering British novelist Hall Caine at his hotel, "I was reminded of you today by meeting Mr. Hall Caine at this hotel." "He asked me to remember him very kindly to you. He inquired very particularly after you and was much pleased that I had met and talked with you so recently. at the Lotos Club." He mentions visiting Madrid and mentions attending a bullfight, "The Bull Fight is exasperatingly brutal but is very exciting and affords a great spectacle." Signed in full "John Elderkin". Folded for mailing with minor creases to the edges. Else near fine. The American author John Elderkin (1841-1926) was a member of The Lotos Club and author of "A Brief History of The Lotos Club" published in 1895. He had previously edited "Lotus Leaves" with John Brougham in 1875. An afficionado of race horses, he wrote "Slow Horses Made Fast and Fast Horses Made Faster" in 1871, contributed to "Every Horse Owners' Cyclopedia" in 1875 and wrote an article for the Atlantic Monthly in 1868 "The Turf and the Trotting Horse in America". Elderkin in 1896 authored a book on his ancestor "John Elderkin, One of the Founders of Connecticut, and some of his Descendants".
