As Douglas was travelling to Salisbury, Rooke's covering letter did not arrive with 'Dr. Mavor's Present' (William Fordyce Mavor, 1758-1837, cleric and educationalist; the present may be the second edition of his 'Universal stenography', published in 1792). 'I had read the Performance soon after it appeared, & liked it much, both as to the Matter, & the Stile.
