Hardback. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. First Edition. 1965. First edition. xliii, 209pp., frontispiece, 4 other black and white illustrations, 3 maps in the text (2 folding) and a map on the endpapers. The British connexion with Sumatra began at the time of the first voyages of the East India company a…nd continued until the early decades of the 19th century. During most of that period the British administered extensive territorial possessions along the west coast of the island. The history of British administration in West Sumatra is an interesting subject not only because it represented one of the earliest and longest experiments in British colonial rule in South-East Asia, but also because it was one of the most short-sighted. The 162 volumes of Sumatra Factory Records in the India Office Library contain a wealth of information on the history of Sumatra but have never been examined thoroughly, although use has been made of some volumes. The extracts in this book represent only a tiny part of these records; and are published in the hope that they may arouse the interest of a student prepared to undertake a comprehensive study of the whole period of British rule in West Sumatra. The book is bound in the original brown cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with light bumping to the top front corner, bottom rear corner and the spine ends. The contents are tight and clean with a previous owner's monogram stamp on the bottom corner of the half-title page and a small name and address label and handwritten name, place and date on the top edge of the front free endpaper. The unclipped dustwrapper has shelf wear with some soiling and the spine is slightly sunned. The top edge is worn with creasing, small pieces missing and several tears (some have been repaired on the reverse with document repair tape). About 1 1/4" is missing from the top of the spine and up to about 3/4" is missing from the bottom of the spine. Small pieces are missing from the corner tips and there is a small hole in the rear spine edge.
