Ungekürzte Ausgabe. Insgesamt 978 Seiten mit 60 Abbildungen. Inhalt: Ferdinand Adolf Gregorovius (* 19. Januar 1821 in Neidenburg (Ostpreußen); 1. No Binding. Condición: Very Good. Size: 28.7cm x 19.5cm. Strasbourg: Johann Prüss, not after 21 October 1497. Original incunable leaf from Tractatus III: De Avibus et Volatilibus, from the first Strasbourg edition of one of the great illustrated natural-history encyclopaedias of the fifteenth century, printed in Latin in double-column Gothic type and illustrated here with three original woodcuts. Of particular importance is Capitulum LXI, Arpia - the Harpy, in which this fabulous creature is treated as part of the natural world: the text describes harpies as ravenous predatory birds armed with curved claws and possessing human faces, recounts their ferocity and supposed ability to speak with a human voice, and explicitly cites Virgil's account of the Harpies in Book III of the Aeneid. The Harpy illustration itself occurred on the preceding leaf. The first woodcut present here introduces Capitulum LXII, Hyrundo - the Swallow, showing numerous swallows wheeling around the roofs and towers of a medieval building, corresponding to the text's detailed discussion of their nesting in houses, construction of nests from straw and mud, seasonal return and the legendary medicinal lapis celidonius. A second striking woodcut introduces Capitulum LXIII, Erodios / Herodius, explicitly identified in the text as the girfalco or gyrfalcon, and presents a vigorous, highly stylised hunting scene with a large raptor, a hound-like quadruped and long-eared quarry; the chapter describes the bird's exceptional strength and the employment of trained dogs during the hunt. The third woodcut introduces Capitulum LXIIII, Ibis and depicts the long-legged bird at the water's edge, accompanying a text associating the ibis with Egypt and serpents and distinguishing it from the stork. A fascinating conjunction of mythology, classical authority, medieval bestiary tradition, early natural history and medicine, demonstrating the intellectual world of the Hortus Sanitatis, in which fabulous creatures such as the Harpy were discussed beside observable birds. The first Strasbourg edition contains more than 1,000 woodcuts and is bibliographically recorded as ISTC ih00487000; GW 13550; Goff H487; BSB-Ink H-389; CIBN H-295; Klebs 509.3. Comparison with the digitised McGill University copy confirms the edition and textual sequence of this leaf. Very good condition for an original fifteenth-century leaf, with strong dark impressions, sound paper, broad margins, expected age-toning, scattered light spotting and marking, faint marginal staining, minor edge and handling wear and a small manuscript/pencil notation towards the upper margin; uncoloured. A particularly evocative and desirable original 1497 natural-history incunable leaf, notable for its substantial Harpy account and three woodcut illustrations.…
