Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. The Footsteps Exact date unknown, Early August 1973 Stephanie and I were alone in the house for the night. Summer vacation had her enthralled with late hours, even though she was only eight years old. As the evening progressed, the dog in the next yard kept howling! Uneasiness swept over me. I kept going to the sliding glass doors in the breakfast nook to peer into the backyard, looking for a clue to the dog's unorthodox behavior. He had never howled like that before; it was spine tingling! The yard was brightly lit and the lights danced off the pool in a rush of silver. It was such a pretty sight! But the lights fell short of the yard and foliage that encompassed the fence giving the illusion of incredible depth. The fence surrounding the yard and the shrubbery threw ominous shadows everywhere, making the dog's howling eerie. The house was locked up tight! I pulled the heavily lined, white drapes shut, enclosing the family room just in case something was out there that I couldn't see. Or someone was looking into the house from the shadows. Then I turned and asked Stephanie if she would like to watch television upstairs in the family room with me. Somehow, the familiar noises of television were far more comfortable than a howling dog! So, I waited patiently, but the uneasiness heightened as I busied myself in the kitchen. Still, the distinct feeling that we were being watched persisted. It was an anxious feeling and it was so strong like anticipating impending doom. I was scared and couldn't wait to go upstairs to escape that feeling. After a little coaxing, Stephanie finally put her crayons away, and we went upstairs together. Looking over my shoulder as we climbed the stairs, the uneasiness lifted somewhat. Stephanie put on her nightgown and prepared for bed. Then she came into the family room and sat down on the love seat opposite from me, to watch television. She fell asleep almost immediately. She was too heavy to carry, so I woke her up and walked her to my bed. She had her own bed, but that night she preferred mine. After tucking her in, I turned on the hallway light. It filtered into the bedroom. (Stephanie was afraid of the dark. She always slept with a light on usually in the closet.) Then, I returned to the family room to watch television. Meanwhile, Cheryl came home. She walked upstairs and sat on the opposite love seat the same one Stephanie had been on minutes earlier. After a little small talk, we watched television. With someone other than Stephanie in the house, I could take the bubble bath I had wanted. Forgetting all about the howling dog and the uneasiness that had encompassed me earlier in the evening, I prepared the tub for a nice hot bath, undressed and climbed in. Rest at last it was so peaceful. Then, the dog began to howl again! And once again that TERRIBLE howling sent goose bumps up and down my spine. And that awful uneasiness came over me once more! I stiffened up in the tub! Then I heard what sounded like heavy feet climbing the stairs from the downstairs hallway. Each step hit the stair and slid on the carpet as if a weary traveler had just returned home. And each step was heavy like a man's footsteps. It appeared the person ascending the stairs wasn't in any hurry, and wasn't afraid of being detected. With each step, the noise became a little louder as the person climbed the stairs toward the bathroom at the head of the stairs - the one that I was in! The dog howled continuously frightening me out of my wits! I looked around the bathroom, but there wasn't anything that could be used as a weapon. NOTHING! I froze as the footsteps stopped directly in front of the bathroom door. It Shipping may be from our Sydney, NSW warehouse or from our UK or US warehouse, depending on stock availability.…
