First mentioned by name in the mid-ninth century (though it can trace its origins back some two centuries before that) it has existed on the map of England ever since. Many changes have taken place since those far-off days changes in landscape, society, economics, transport and local govern-ment. Battles have been fought, great abbeys come and gone, villages have become towns. The County boundary itself was drastically altered in 1974 (though links with the Vale of White Horse and other parts of 'Berkshire' remain strong). A major change in the government of Berkshire took place in 1998 with the abolition of Berkshire County Council, but that was the end of another chapter in the County's history, not the end of the story. For Berkshire continues as a County, a geographic and cultural entity providing a focus for the loyalties and activities of many organisations and individuals. This volume, then, is not a memorial to Berkshire, but a sign.
