Añadir al carritoHardback. Condición: Fair. Some books are merely read. Others are studied. Euripides: Alcestis ? Text and Notes belongs firmly to the latter category, and this particular copy appears to have spent much of the last century fulfilling that duty with admirable dedication. Published around 1920 by the University Tutorial Press, this scholarly edition presents Euripides? Alcestis , one of the most intriguing works to survive from ancient Greece. It is a play that refuses to behave entirely as a tragedy, despite containing death, sacrifice and considerable emotional turmoil. Instead, Euripides cheerfully blends tragedy, mythology, domestic drama and moments of unexpected humour into something that has puzzled, delighted and occasionally bewildered readers for over two thousand years. The story itself centres on Alcestis, a devoted wife willing to die in place of her husband, Admetus. This premise alone would have supplied most ancient playwrights with enough material for a straightforward tragedy. Euripides, however, had other ideas. The result is a work that shifts unexpectedly between solemnity and absurdity, creating a drama that feels surprisingly modern in its willingness to mix tones. There is a wonderful irony in reading Alcestis today. The play was already centuries old when the Romans encountered it. It was ancient when medieval scholars copied it. It was ancient when Shakespeare was writing. By the time this edition appeared around 1920, the text had already survived empires, invasions, plagues and countless educational reforms. One suspects it will survive a few more. For students of Greek literature, editions such as this were once essential companions. Before the age of searchable databases and online translations, aspiring scholars sat hunched over volumes exactly like this one, painstakingly deciphering ancient Greek while muttering darkly about grammar and irregular verbs. Judging by this copy, one or more former owners embraced that tradition with enthusiasm. Indeed, one of the most charming features of this volume is its extensive annotation. Much of the text is accompanied by faint pencil notes, observations and scholarly markings left by previous readers. These marginalia transform the book into something more than a simple edition. It becomes a record of study itself, preserving traces of generations who wrestled with Euripides and occasionally felt compelled to write down their thoughts. There is something oddly comforting about such evidence of use. Academic books often aspire to pristine condition, but heavily annotated classics possess a different kind of appeal. They remind us that great literature is not merely collected but engaged with. Somewhere in the past, somebody spent a considerable amount of time trying to understand this text and left behind faint clues to the process. This copy remains in fair condition and comes from the shelves of Crappy Old Books. The inside cover hinge has been carefully repaired with brown paper to strengthen the binding. The book contains extensive pencil annotations throughout, most of them faint but visible across much of the text. Despite these signs of age and academic service, it remains sound, usable and full of character. An excellent acquisition for collectors of classical literature, students of ancient Greek drama, lovers of annotated books or anyone who enjoys the peculiar experience of reading a text that has already been read, studied and argued with for more than two millennia. Euripides may have written Alcestis in the fifth century BC, but this old tutorial edition proves that some conversations continue remarkably well across the centuries.…

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book is a notable prose dialogue, a literary form frequently employed during the Hellenistic period for philosophical investigation. The author, who himself was a playwright, casts his philosophical ideas within the framework of a domestic drama. Through lively and often humorous interactions between the characters, he explores diverse ethical perspectives and their practical implications. Ultimately, the text questions the nature and value of education and lineage, and how our true worth is ultimately determined by our actions rather than external circumstances or social conventions. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
